Buddy Pass, how long

I'm attempting to get a buddy pass from a friend but I won't be able to talk to him for a few days till Im back in the states. So I thought Id ask how long it typically takes to get a buddy pass. BTW it's a 1000 mile trip (in the states) if that factors into the wait time.
