Did UPS have a hard landing incident/accident in an MD-11 recently? I thought I saw that news somewhere and curious as to the cause or the truthfulness of it.

Yes, in SDF last week which was ruled an accident due to the monetary damage to the plane. Will be in repair for about 3 months. Don't know if hard landing caused it though.

I'm thinking this is reason #1!?!?!?

Reading about the MD-11 in AW&ST...

Sounds like it has a propensity for hard/bounced landings.....

Ala FDX in EWR....

The nose gear didn't catch on fire until one of the nose tires seperated on touchdown, the other shredded on rollout and the metal sparks on the runway started it.

"UPS xxxx are you going to be evacuating?"

"(long pause) Uhhhhh, do we need to?"

"Probably, you're on fire."

EDIT: As told to me 20th-hand by somebody who heard from their uncle's brother's girlfriend's cousin.

I had that happen to me in a Lear 25 on landing.

The controller asked if I needed the trucks to come after us.

Of course I asked, WHY!

He said we were trailing a thick smoke trail all the way down the runway right when we touched down.

I said bring em on.

We blew a Hyd line to a TR and when the 5606 got all cought up in the exuast, it smoked like an airshow performance.

MD11 Dual strut design

"Most" MD11's have a dual strut design that differs significantly from the DC/MD10 series aircraft. No problem in and of it's self, other than the servicing of this strut takes a significant amount time and care. When the MD11 first came into service this problem was noted time and time again with the first group of operators. Finally when the maint. folks got a handle on the issues and the differences required for "proper" strut servicing, things smoothed out. It's just not a matter of pumping enough nitrogen in the strut to get 3 or 4 inches of chrome showing. It is a lot more complicated and time consuming to get it done correctly.

Not saying this was the cause of this mishap, but it is certainly worth looking at.

Well. until the 3 month investigation is over, I would say the reason is unknown. Could have been a maint. problem!!!!!!!! Ya never know.

Apparently, somebody wasn't nearly as amused.

That signature has been around for quite a while, and the wisecrack was fairly benign.

Oh, well, they don't ask for my opinion, do they?

Eagle Flip PC police ?

You've got to be kidding me ? Hugh's signature was that bad ??

I thought the AF had mellowed out in the last few years. Guess I left at the right time. Too many women Eagle drivers "sucking up" for promotion.

You've got a regular job now Eagle, show a pair (and not your nipples).
