Skywest Pilot Escorted Off Plane After Screener Smelled Alcohol

Thu, 07 Sep '06
No Charges Filed As Pilot Placed On Administrative Leave

As if passengers don't have enough hassle dealing with long security lines and restrictions on carry on items... A Skywest flight scheduled with 21 passengers bound for Salt Lake City, UT was delayed three hours at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls, SD Wednesday morning while the airline scrambled to replace one of the pilots.
Security personnel manning the metal detector smelled alcohol when the pilot passed through and called police. The responding officers boarded the aircraft and escorted the pilot off the aircraft before the flight left the gate.
In an interview with KELO TV, Police Chief Doug Barthel said, "We made contact with the pilot on the plane and determined that he had been consuming some alcohol. At that point he was removed from the plane."
It's not know at this time how much alcohol the pilot had in his system, if any. FAA limits blood alcohol content to .04%, but Skywest has a "zero tolerance" policy. No charges have been filed as yet.
While the investigation continues Skywest has placed the pilot on administrative leave.

Why is it that they always make it to the airplane and then they are pulled off by the cops instead of stopping them right there at security where there is normally cops already ....?

For more accountability.

It's quite possible to finish a 4 day trip, have a couple of beers and deadhead home. If they see a pilot that smells of alcohol, they'll watch/ check to sew whether he's scheduled to fly.

Drinking while deadheading? Prohibited, at least at our company.

Prohibited by your company....Yes, but not against the law. The Police don't care if you break a company policy, only if you're breaking a law. You aren't breaking a law until you step into that flight deck with intent to fly the airplane.

EXACTLY! If they arrest you at the gate, you simply say that you were feeling ill and were on your way to use the station phone to call in sick...they can't even begin to prove intent to operate heavy equipment now, and they cannot require that you take a BAC test...you're sick, so you are off duty.

Letting you get to the cockpit pretty much proves the intent part.

On that note, if somehow you ever find yourself going through security and start having doubts about how your breath smells and why that screener was scrutinizing you...IMMEDIATELY exit back out of security, go back to the hotel and call in sick! Then think long and hard about how this happened in the first place.
