Before I continue, I should mention a few things: Nancy is a faithful reader of this site, and I agreed to use only her first name because of the brutal nature of the crime and the age of the victim. Second, I’m not an emotional, John Boehner-type, but I can’t read her story without getting a little teary.

Sorry to disappoint, SWA didn't seek out someone to "release" the story.

Is this the story about the Southwest captain that held the flight so a last-minute passenger could be at his loved one's bedside when they discontinued life support?

I thought that's the one we were talking about. I saw the story on CNN while I was at the airport the other day and it just seemed kind of canned to me.

If there's something else out there that I wasn't aware of, then I apologize for speaking out of turn and acting like a jerk.

Yes, same story. Read an internal brief this afternoon that the company wasn't going to even release the Capt's name to avoid additional attention he would receive while the family is still in mourning.

I may be biased, but in my nearly 3 years here I have yet to see the company do something like that to draw attention to themselves. Crazy marketing gimmicks, and silly commercials of course, but never something that would have used a grieving family as the cornerstone of publicity.
