They just "crop dusted" Ann Arbor Michigan (one of THE MOST ecologically minded community's in the WORLD) with kerosene from a 747-400 bound for Narita at 7000 ft for about 30-40 minutes (orbited). Shouldn't they have not done the "race track" as that concentrates the fuel in one area? They could have gone 30 miles northwest and been in a waaaay less populated farmland area. EVERYTHING around my area smells like kerosene as it has rained for 5 days here and the humidity is high. A lot of that stuff made it to the ground. I've had the neighbors calling relentlessly, knowing I'm involved in aviation.

The news just reported that the plane had a gear problem and that the crew never declared an emergency, and that "Northwest Airlines apologizes for any inconvenience". I think someone's sphincter is gonna be in a ringer over this one.

Hi Sparky,

let's not jump to conclusions ok, the media said. I like that one, would you like me to give you a laundry list of things the media said. God forbid something was more serious, checklists were being run, who knows, maybe bells and whistles were going off. The last thing I would be concerned about is exactly what I was dumping fuel on. My first priority is to my crew and passengers.

Why don;t we simmer down till the report is out. I am sure being the 747 ace of the base you are, you would have probably done things differently and flawlessly.

AA:rolleyes:

There is always a handful that feel bigger by making others look smaller.

Hmmmm, kerosene smell for a couple days or a 747 plowing into my home... I can live with the smell for a day or two.

A little Jet-A over Ann Arbor sounds apropos.

That just made my day seeing that they dumped all that gas over the "yuppy hippies" in ann arbor... haha.

Glad to hear everyone is safe.

I agree with AAflyer....the media?...I remember when the 727 and DC-9 hit in DTW and the media reported over 50 people dead.....but, OOPS, they were all taken to the hospital....IDIOTS!!!

Min altitude to dump is 4 or 6 I forget the number and ATC usually send you an holding fix of their choosing. They are really more concern that you don't dump on an other a/c.And the oldest a 400 could be is 22. 1984 I think.

I agree with you about the media. However I watched the fuel dump. I was amazed immediately that they could dump that low. And when we started smelling it a lot of people got pissed off very quickly.

If the controller directed them to hold over AA, knowing that they would dump fuel, my theory is that the controller is an OHIO STATE BUCKEYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IDIOTS....

NWA was the launch customer in 1988/89/ UAL was number two. Most 400's are 1989 or later.

Yup... 6301 is the oldest one.. delivered in 1989 I believe. 6316 was delivered in 2002 or so.

I've got a great little hippie town in SW Ohio that needs a good shower of Jet-A. They're so crazy they made a town ordanece stating no military aircraft could fly over the town. That turned out to be a bit of a problem with an F-16 squadron about 5 miles away and a C-141 wing about 10 miles away.

OK, fact #1. There is no obvious reason to declare an emergency. Gear won't come up? Not an emergency. Have to dump to get to landing weight? Not an emergency.

Fact #2. Dump locations and altitudes are determined not by NWA, but by the feds.

Fact #3. Many dumps are done for cya. If you don't like dumping fuel in this kind of situation, then get the lawyers out of our cockpits.

FACT: NWA contributes to pollution.

FACT: NWA pilots fly big planes for less $$.

FACT: After NWA pilots took paycuts, they dumped fuel all over Ann Arbor.

FACT: Thanks to NWA, smoking cigarettes in Ann Arbor is hazardous to your health.

Went off your medication?

dang hippies are always gripin about something <sarcasm>

I hate hippies! I mean, the way they always talk about "protectin' the earth" and then drive around in cars that get poor gas mileage and wear those stupid bracelets - I hate 'em! I wanna kick 'em in the nuts!

Is this plane 20 or 30 years old? Seems that most of the stuff NW flies is double-digit in age.
Yeah, they don't have any new Airbus 319's, 320's, 330's,757-300's or 747-400's--everything they have is propeller driven and is a bi-wing.

If it was up to me, I'd have dumped napalm on them. Then they would have something to complain about. Damn pinko, communist, tree hugging, tea drinking, beard growing, pierced nipple ring wearing, group hugging, whale saving, America hating, liberal voting, Ted Kennedy loving, Barbara Streisand listening to, armpit hair growing (women), Mary Jane reefer smoking, crack addicted bastards. With the price of gas, I would think 2 or 3 thousand gallons of free petroleum products falling from the sky would be viewed as a blessing. All this new generation wants to do is complain.

Boeing designed a faulty product that can't retract it's gear, or did the pilots miss something on pre-flight, or did the mechanics ancestors mate with chimpanzees?

Maybe we can all pile in our Toyota pickup trucks and drive to Ann Arbor and wave Chinese made American flags at them, that'll make em nervous.

The place smells better now.

Like victory in the Morning

I went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from Sept. 2002 to just now, April 2006.

This "hippy" painting picture is really inaccurate.
There may be tree huggers around campus, but environmental groups are at every large college.

And yes, we were and still are overwhelmingly liberal/democratic. For the 2004 elections, I remember on the Michigan map, Washtenaw county was dark dark blue with all the student votes for Kerry/Edwards.

Hate us for that? Too bad. Some people have had it with this current administration, including me.

Fact #4. Declaring an emergency gives the Captain relief from the regs should he have to deviate from them at anytime during their obvious abnormal situation. Usually in situations like these it boils down to declaring an emergency DURING or sending in the NASA form/contacting ALPA REP after. Declaring an emergency is cheap insurance on the front side.

Go smoke your peace pipe crack head. This is the majors board. Since you are not a major airline pilot, maybe you should go to the "amusement ride board" and post. Or maybe try the "water pipe forum".
Peace.
I'll be off finding my inner voice's whisper and writing a haiku.
