I apologize in advance for posting something aviation-related. I figured there might be a few people interested in this anyway. :)

Boeing launches 7E7 with 50-plane ANA order
TOKYO/SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co. said on Monday that All Nippon Airways ordered 50 of its 7E7 jetliners in the largest commercial jet launch order in the U.S. aircraft maker's history.

The order allows Boeing to proceed with its first all-new aircraft in more than a decade, seen as a key move in regaining market share lost to Airbus, which overtook Boeing last year for the No.1 spot in commercial jet deliveries.

Boeing said the order was valued at $6 billion at list prices, although these are routinely discounted, especially for launch-order contracts.

ANA will begin taking delivery of the new aircraft in 2008 but has not yet chosen an engine maker for its 7E7s, which are being offered with twin power plants made by either Rolls-Royce Plc or General Electric Aircraft Engines.

The order helps Boeing maintain its stranglehold on jetliner sales in Japan, where it has a market share around 80 percent, aided by close ties to Japanese manufacturers.

Also, Boeing to Proceed With 7E7 Jet After $6 Bln ANA Order (Update1)
April 26 (Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co., the world's second- biggest maker of commercial aircraft, said it will proceed with plans to develop its 7E7 jetliner after securing a $6 billion order for 50 planes from Japan's All Nippon Airways Co.

The board of Chicago-based Boeing approved plans to start making the so-called ``Dreamliner'' aircraft because of ``the overall strong business case for the new airplane,'' the company said in a statement carried by the PRNewswire.

Boeing is relying on the 7E7 jetliner to help it grab back leadership of the global market for commercial aircraft that it surrendered to Europe's Airbus SAS last year. Airbus has orders for 129 of its A380 aircraft, for which Boeing has no rival.

``It's a good start for Boeing to get the plane launched, since it's a long time since they have a new plane, and they have lost market share to Airbus,'' said Alan Beaney, who helps manage the equivalent of $1.1 billion at Principal Investment Management in Sevenoaks, England. ``It's still early days for them. You will want to see what the follow-up orders will be.''

The order of 50 aircraft is the biggest ever for a new commercial airliner, Boeing said in its press statement, citing its commercial airplanes unit president and chief executive officer Alan Mulally in saying interest in the 7E7 is ``extraordinary.''

Tokyo-based All Nippon Air, Asia's second-largest carrier by sales, today became the first airline to commit to using the proposed plane. Singapore Airlines Ltd., the world's second largest carrier by market value, said in February that it would consider the 7E7 plane as part of its fleet expansion.

Good news for Boeing.

Shocking and scandalous!

Good news for the folks at Boeing. Hopefully the USAF can finally order those KC-767's too, then they will be in mighty nice shape.

ANA ordered the 7E7 because a large percentage of the airplane is going to be made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries...so please stop waving the American flags thinking Boeing is back on top.

I guarantee that you will see many, many airlines order the 7E7. Yes, ANA bought the airplanes in part because of the association with Mitsubishi/Fuji, but they were also heavily involved in the design process.

There is also talk of an American launch customer, but for the life of me I cannot think of who that would be. I'm sure we won't hear much more before the airshows this summer.

Airbus can't just take the 7E7 engines and stick them on the A330 and be competitive either, and since they're tied up with A380 development it will be awhile before they can respond.

ANA would have ordered the 7E7 no matter what, it fits the ANA motto of the "2" engine aircraft and ANA was looking to replace their 767's which are getting close to replacement age. The fact that the aircraft is partially produced in Japan was a bonus to the Japanese government.

It was a win for Boeing

Who did you see doing that?

I'm jealous because I can't hear the voices you hear! :)

Hello,
I cannot cite the source at the moment, but I read an article stating that the 7E7 cockpit will be a reflection of the current 777/767-400 style. Taking full advantage of State-of-the-Art flat screen LCDs, cursor control device and FMS software. Certainly is an elegant looking design and hopefully Boeing will have a successful maketing program.
Someone mentioned the fact that we shouldn't "wave the American flag" or Boeing's banner. I disagree wholeheartedly and could npt be more pleased that the Japanese are a major player in the 7E7 program. Airbus is also a multi-national consortium, but enjoys the price supports of their respective governments. This is what has made it so difficult for Boeing to compete. Perhaps some of you may recall an early campaign speech by a former president from Arkansas?
Unfortuntely, we don't enjoy a fair marketplace for our goods overseas, and this has led to the demise of Boeing's market dominance. Let's hope the 7E7 will be innovative enough to capture a marketshare that Airbus has ignored in it's marketing research. They are taking a huge risk, just like Boeing did in 1965 when it launched the 747 program. I think the survival of the Airbus consortium and Boeing is at stake here with A-380 and B-7E7 programs respectively.

Oh yes, I'm sure that's the only reason. And no European carrier ever ordered an Airbus just because it's home grown, right?

Pretty radical lines on that thing. Good looking airplane! I can't wait to see the prototype... Looks like the flight deck windshields have a 90 degree bend in them.

I guess it's pretty hard to figure out who could be the US launch customer. Everyone I think of, I quickly come to my senses and realize.....no...

Maybe if they make some sort of deal to replace their old 767s, delta will be the one?

I think it will be a long time before any majors will be buying the 7E7 with pilots on furlough and bankruptcy looming at every quarterly financial report.

As far as the flag waiving I mentioned previously. I can't tell you how many times I hear pilots talking about "buy amercican"...that's why I made the comment.
But, tell that to all the Boeing workers who have lost their jobs.

Kaman-
Blaming Clinton for the demise of Boeing is most likely what Boeing executives have been doing for the past 10 years...let's just keep our heads in the sand, blame the Democrats, and whine about the unfair advantage Airbus has in the marketplace. Rather than coming out with innovative products and listening to customers, Boeing continues to shutdown factories, consoldate product lines and spend 100's of millions of R&D dollars on horrible products like the joint strike fighter which they lost to Lockheed-Martin. In the meantime, Boeing workers continue to loose their jobs. So, please keep Clinton out this. Boeing continues to make bad decisions that cost them market share in the civil avaition market...like deciding NOT to design and build Regional Jets. Also, I'll remind you that Boeing is still under investigation by the Feds for the government contracts scandal from last year.

I think airbus will outsell boeing for a long time. the price difference being the main reason. i am looking forward to the 7E7 though.
