Could the 727 fly only using the #1 and #3 enigines? During the whole flight, takeoff to landing?
Always wondered about those 3 holers if they could just not use one and save gas..

Sure it can, but only for mtc ferry flights. 2 engine ferry flights are normal, however, you need to meet certain requirements first (no passengers or cargo, vfr, qualified ferry crew, etc)

I can't remember, but I think there was some talk at one time of removing the number 2 engine, and then replacing the #1 and #3 engines with the same engine the md-80'S have (jd8d 217'2 or 219's).

It can do it just not very gracefully. I did a 2 engine ferry from MMPR(Puerto Vallarta)-KDFW and I believe the highest we could go was around FL230-240 or so. The climb is very slow. And the takeoff was a whole other subject. We had the number one engine strapped (not windmilling)...

We went with bare minimum fuel, no cargo, no pax, just the 3 crewmembers...

FedEx has 27's with JT8D-217A pod engines. The center engine is nothing more than a big APU. The airplane can peg the VVI in climb and I have seen a light one airborne in less than 2000'.

Yeah, but that's not a REAL 727. Long live 'Miss Piggy'! :D BTW, two engines on a 727 is an emergency. One engine just increases the speed at impact... ;) TC
