Hey just wondering how hard it is to get out of BKK to NRT. Was checking the loads and they seem pretty full. Anyone have advice or alternate routes back to the states
If they are full then it will be difficult. If there are seats then you be able to get on. Like any other flight, depends on the time of year, specific day, etc. Have a backup pass on ANA or JAL or THAI or whoever also flies the route.
IMO you should take a ZED fare whenever you are traveling overseas. Especially when you are returning from a foreign country. Gate agents overseas don't always understand what a "jumpseat" is and ZEDs can be difficult to purchase once you are at an outstation. For one thing, a lot of foreign ticket counters are only open when flights are arriving or departing. At some stations that window is only open for a few hours and the agents are busy the entire time and can't help you. Remember a ZED is 100% refundable if returned unused within a certain period (generally around 6 months).
BKK-NRT on NWA or UAL is pretty easy to do with the gate agents. They are very familar with the process once you mention that you are a pilot. Expect to meet the crew before they transit security, in front of the check in counter, for credential verification, and then seat assignment if available.
Your best back up is a ZED on Thai Airways. Thai Airways is also well versed with non rev's and it's seemless traveling on them when seats are available. Moreover, they fly between 4-5 flights a day to NRT.
