Wo....Dude....Are you kidding me? What else would you expect from a CEO who quotes Austin Powers?

Ted to launch in February; is Bill far behind?
Dateline: Thursday November 13, 2003

United Airlines confirmed that its new low-fare operation will be named Ted (ATWOnline, Nov. 11).

Executive VP-Customer John Tague said the name was chosen to "emphasize that the service is an essential, integrated part of the company--it’s the last three letters of the company's name."
United also restated that Ted will launch in Feb. with four A320s configured for 156 seats in a single-class cabin, offering service from Denver to Reno, Las Vegas, Phoenix, New Orleans, Tampa, Orlando, Ontario (Calif.) and Ft. Lauderdale--a route currently not served by United. Ted also will operate between Las Vegas and Los Angeles and between San Francisco and Las Vegas and Phoenix.

In an interesting conjunction, US Airways Group President and CEO David Siegel told an analysts' meeting yesterday that US Airways is contemplating a low-fare unit of its own with a working name of Bill. However, he added that such initiatives are unlikely to succeed unless the parent airline's "core cost is competitive," which US Airways' is not. Siegel said, "Bill, is expected as an extension of our alliance with United Airlines--Ted and Bill's excellent low-cost alliance," a reference to the Hollywood surprise hit comedy of a few years back, "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."--LF
