What is the best logbook software?

NC Software just released a huge update to their Logbook Pro software. I was one of the testers that worked on the final release the past month+. It's fascinating what they did with the new version. You can download it and check it out, but also look at the pictures/information on their online tour and documentation which I got to by clicking the links on the left of their logbookpro.com web site. It has Palm and Pocket PC versions too. They just put out a press release according to the announcement at the top of this forum which gives everyone a discount if you buy before the middle of June.

For another option (other than the heavily promoted and advertised on this site Logbook Pro), might I suggest AeroLog Pro. I have used it since the days of DOS, and have been with them through each of their updates.

It is very user friendly, able to filter any combination of times you desire, and comes with a Pocket PC or Palm companion. I have found it to be extremely easy to learn, use, create filters for logging and totaling times, and it's easy to print a very professional logbook using this program.

The logbook I have printed using this program has been accepted by several airlines, and by the UK CAA when I was applying for a CAA/JAA ATPL.

I have also had several occasions to get personal help and advice from Mr. North, the creator of the program. He has always been available, friendly and more than willing to offer his help.

Of course, if you are even remotely computer literate, you can create your own logbook using Excel or a similar program, and pay nothing to anyone....

It's back now. Logshare recently got a bit of commerical sponsership, so I think its good for the long run.

Still, I recommend you frequently use its export to comma-delimited file option to back it up locally.

Flightlevel 2000

I use flightlevel 2000, I know there is a newer version of it right now, but it has been great. I checked out several, and wanted to pick the best one for my needs.

It does several things that I like, I can print my own log, two pages opened laid out side-by-side make a logbook entry and look like a normal logbook in which you write in the entires. Every application asks for information based upon total hours, or hours within a specific time frame and you can put in the parameters. It is nice to be able to figure out the hours for a specific application within moments instead of pulling out the calculator and be absolutely certain that it is correct.

Since I have used the software, I have had two new computers and I have taken the program and data with me, and never had to save the disks, I just got ahold of the people at flightlevel and they have given me free dowloads to take the program to my next computer, top notch service. After all, what good will it do to have the software on an old computer and not be able to use it later. It took me four days to take all the data and put it on my computer, I never want to have to type that much information again.

I am sure other people have their preferences, and this is mine and it has been good for me.

I've used Logbook Pro for the last 4 years. I can't say enough about the product and the support I've received the few times I've needed it. Nick has done a tremendous job in creating, supporting, and improving this software and the response time when I've had questions has been within a few hours. Not to mention every subsequent upgrade and version has been free. Consider those aspects when you consider different programs.

No, I receive nothing for this endorsement and know nobody personally, but I just call it like I see it. If it was junk, I'd certainly say so.

I can prove hyper has no connections...the guy that develops logbook pro is Neal, not Nick.

Just razzing ya a bit, hyper.

Back on topic, I also use logbook pro. Neal consistently answers my questions (whether on his forum or via email) within 10 min. No joking. Even over Memorial Day weekend. He is also receptive to inpit for changes on future revisions (much like Mark is here).

There are some downsides, however. Neal is a little fanatical about the licensing stuff. I understand why, as it is his livelyhood and people tend to want to avoid paying for licenses, but it gets bad sometimes. For example, I had to purchase two different licenses to run two logbooks on two different computers. Ok, no problem. But, then when I was ready to put both logbooks onto one computer, I was told I'd have to purchase a third license, the enterprise edition. Didn't really seem right to pay for three licenses for two logbooks. Besides that issue, I'm happy with the program.
