My advice if you are trying to go cheap is stay somewhere cheap (like Imperial Palace) that is on the monorail line and by monorail passes. If you do Imperial Palace you are also right at the center of the strip. Granted these rooms and the hotel are dated/nothing special but you are in the center of the action.

No such thing as cheap in vegas anymore... one suggestion is to book well ahead of time and use hotels.com...the sem to have nailed down the best prices in general. If your a poker player, then there are many hotel poker rooms that will give you a pretty good room rate once you have played for a certain period...

Lasvegas.com generally has better deals than hotels.com.

No such thing as a cheap room anymore. Doesn't seem to matter what day of the week either. Not many Su-Th deals out there anymore. I just read the average strip room rate is up to $236 (year round average) per night.

Go to each hotels website as well. Check out their on line specials.

Downtown is usually much less expensive.

Things to keep in mind if you stay downtown....

1) The area is dirty
2) If you stray off of Fremont Street, you're putting your life at risk
3) Hotels are much more smoke filled
4) If you should try and actually sleep before 2am, you'll have the noise of the Fremont Street Experience keeping you up.
5) $40 taxi ride to the strip
6) Unless you stay at the Golden Nugget, the rooms are old and yucky. :)

You're not gonna get the best on the strip for cheap, but you can find decent stuff.
Treasure Island is about $120, New York New York is $100, The Monte Carlo is $95, the Excalibur is $55, Circus Circus is about $45.

New York New York is probably the best out of those and sometimes they give a $10 airline discount, but TI is nice too. If you plan on going Thurs - Sunday plan on paying about twice that.

Excalibur is probably the best deal for the really cheap ones on the strip, but you get what you pay for, so expect a lot of children, and less than desirable guests. If you don't plan on staying in your room much, then it shouldn't be a problem.
