I know this post has been out there before. My father flew back to MT for the summer and is now back in FL. The last annual was only $4200. If you look into AD's the duke only has about 4. Other airplanes like the 421 has 19 or more. I can promise you and the logbooks prove it that this is the cleanest nicest airplane you will ever find for $150,000. It is all hanger talk like the 421 was 15 years ago. My father is selling it because he is getting up there in age... If you see this let my father know .

If it's the best deal out there why is it still for sale months later? Is the majors section a good place to be advertising stuff for sale?

I have a house for sale if anyone is looking for a great deal. I bought it in 2007 and I'm willing to let it go for what i paid 5 years ago...

I can answer that. My father is not trying to sell out of desperation. It's not in trade a plane ect.... He has flown GA for 35 years now. He is getting to the age it is about time to hang up his wings. If anyone is serious after seeing the airplane and the fact that it lived in MT 98% of its life and if you look at the Maintenance logbook you will not find anything nicer. Why did I put it on the major site. Some of you might want to fly GA and can afford it.

1973, it looks like it was designed yesterday, I love the Duke, my first aircraft as an A&P. So why is this in majors again? not like airline pilots have any money to spare... Maybe try a real-estate forum?

$1200 to fill up, $300-400/hour to operate is why. Piston twins have been crushed in value over the years because of fuel prices. 28 gal/hour on a C-310R wasn't a big deal with gas was $2/gal. At $6 it just makes them to expensive to operate.

Exactly. It's not just the upfront cost of the Airplane (which seems reasonably priced, BTW). It's just gotten too expensive for most guys to justify the hourly cost to fly a twin (especially a Duke). I would cry if I had bought that Airplane and then had to just stare at it in the hangar day after day because I was too broke to actually take it up. I do wish you and your dad luck selling it. Have you thought about just donating it to a nonprofit and just taking the tax deduction. You might actually come out ahead in the long run doing something like that FWIW.

Not to mention AvGas is probably in it's last decade of production. Those who cannot get a mogas STC will probably be SOL in the next few years.

Fear not, you can have PT-6's put on your Duke now.

They'll also put them on a Baron. MGTOW single engine rate of climb is like 1700 FPM

There are other options coming along as well. Several 100LL drop in replacements are showing promise, most notebly Swift Fuel. Diesel is also showing promise. Cessna is cancelling production of the Turbo 182 in place of a Diesel 182. TCM is also working on an STC for a diesel conversion for the Bonanza and Baron. And there are others....

Not all hope is lost for GA.

I've had my 152 for 2.5 years now and in that time 10 people have asked me if I want to sell. They all want to get ride of their 6 cylinder fuel burner and have something they can fly local on 5 gal/hr.

Even as I start making more money I'm not selling to move up. If anything maybe get an 7ECA (same O-235 engine as the 152). I like putzing around at 100mph and 5gal/hr. Plus my friends have cubs and sport planes so I have to fly around at 70mph to stay with them anyway.

100LL in my neck is around $6/gal so at 5 gal/hr it isn't cheap but doesn't break the bank and I can afford to fly it 50+ hours per year. The state of PA should pay me for insect control.

yeah because we all make enough money to buy this stuff.

You should look at the RV-9. Same fuel burn, 40-50 knots faster.

Airline pilots are all rich, why do you think I got into this business?

I'd really like an RV-8. Built light/simple with an O-320 and fixed pitch prop.

I should have my house paid off in the next 5-7 years but until then my PAID FOR spam can 152, 650cc motorcycle, rifle/shotgun/pistol (passed down to me by my grandfather), 10 year old skis and old but reliable steel Gary Fisher 26in wheel mountain bike (29ers look like clown bikes anyway) will have to suffice. I have no interest in boats btw.

Unless you really want something with a single seat feel (and have a wife willing to stare at the back of your head), the 9 is the best bang for the buck from an efficiency stand point. Great xc plane and cheap for local tooling around. If you want the 8 for doing aerobatics, you're really going to need a CS prop at a minimum and will want a 360. Resale on a FP 320 on an 8 will be a huge kick in the junk too.

I'm also keeping my eye out for a nice ACROSPORT 1 (almost an equal trade for the 152). I don't really want anything for XC, just a sport plane for boring holes in the sky, an occasional loop/roll and rat racing my buddies around the sky with.

In 2.5 years and 130 tach hours on my 152 I haven't had it over 2500 AGL or further than 50 miles from my home field.

The ACRO1 would be great and if I wanted to take someone flying I have access to a 172.

That is awesome. I've always thought it would be cool to have one of the 152 tailwheel conversions. Hard to find though.
