Corporate flying is extremely diverse. There really is no standard in which to compare most departments, honestly. Smaller flight departments are great because there is less of the butt kissing factor, but at the same time a lot more is expected out of pilots that fly for small flight departments (i.e. cleaning, stocking airplanes, cleaning hangar floors, etc..). Larger flight departments are usually more focused on flying, but you always have those that try to brown nose their way to the top.

Mine. The people make a good flight dept. Beyond that, we have what we call the ATSM. It is the Air Transport Services Manual. The ATSM lays out all of our rules. We are set up like a 121 airline when it comes to duty days, duty times and pilot duties while we are flying and doing other duties in the office.

What makes all of this work is that the top brass all sign off for it. From the CEO to the head of our department. Yes, I like my job. As I said, it is the peolple you work with day in and day out that make a good department.

I work for a smallish S/E based flight dept. and I love it!

I tend to agree with the others while were all pretty much equal where I work we do have lots of extra duties which I must say none of us really mind. We rotate on a monthly basis through the various miscellaneous chores (by choice) which must be done, some include but are not limited to updating pubs and charts and scheduling non critical maintance items to stocking and cleaning the plane for trips. We also arrange our own catering and hotel accommodation, rental cars etc…

It’s not that bad, the pay is good and we do get decent benefits and once were through with our non flying related chores if we have nothing scheduled we just stay within 90 minutes call time of the airport, carry our cell phone and we can go home.

Sounds like they are all similar in some ways. Its a great way to build time to move on to bigger things..although it takes a special person with a real interest in General Aviation to want to spend their entire career doing it. I wasn't one of those special people.
