stupid question, but how do they navigate the shuttle in for landing? I'm assuming GPS now, but what about before that?

I assume they plot the course into a Flight director and Use A combo of GPS and Ineritial nav to determine the majority of position finding.

At one point they were using a microwave landing system (MLS). My pops showed me a Nat Geo mag from the early '80 that had an article on MLSs. They were going to be the wave of the future and allow airliners to navigate down to a runway on a curved flight path all the way from cruise. I guess RNP will make MLSs obsolete and the FAA never had the funding to install the MLSs in the first place.

I do believe there were a few airports that had them installed. MSP and DFW come to mind.

Did your I-Phone have just shy of 7 million lbs of thrust though?
