Our flight dept. is looking for a way to have a back up gps in our CL-30 when crossing the atlantic. We want to be able to put in our crossing waypoints in case of aircraft gps failure. Have looked at the Garmin 96c and wonder if the antenna will work through the heated wind screens. If the 96c would work can you manually plug in waypoints or does the unit only allow pre-programmed waypoints to be displayed. Also wondering if there is a better option through our Ipad 2 that we have on board. I have talked to foreflight tech support and they recommended a gps receiver that I understand doesn't work well with heated windscreens and the gns 5870 is not compatible for showing the info we would like. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

I've used a Garmin GPSMAP 196 as a backup, in both Fokker and Falcon aircraft; no problems. I like the 196 because it runs off 4 AA batteries, and will last for many hours.
