Heard through the grapevine that an east coast trip for Berry Aviation had a dual engine flameout while encoutering ice.

What i heard was that the metro's engine anti ice system was on during the flameout yet both tpe's failed. 10,000ft was lost in the recovery.

From what i heard, the owner told the crew to lie and report that they forgot to flip on the engine anti ice switch. You know, icy conditions are forcast, I forget all the time .....well, im kidding of course.

Anyone hear anything about this? My source is semi-credible. Just something to look out for. Its ice season. Make sure your anti ice systems work and never try and cover up mx issues. If your company can't give you an airworthy plane, don't fly it.

Like i said, i heard through the grapevine. Don't know if this is true. Just like to hear the story and let people know what to watch out for.
 
More likely, it was not on and upon realizing it they flipped it on and shed a good chunk of ice into each engine at the same time and puffed the flames out. It can happen just that way and the auto continuous ignition of the old style will allow it to happen.

Wow! That would really make for a bad day. It does sound like ice ingestion, but I am curious if the owner really said that. I actually told a friend of mine to look into this company. I dont really know too much about them just that they fly metros and they are somewhere in Texas. V1 cuts are fun, do you happen to know any more about this place? Perhaps I should tell my friend to keep looking elsewhere.
 
Sounds eerily familiar to the "Bullhead City Buldozer" accident by Skylink in L.A. Too bad as it was a nice ship prior to the accident.

Pilot error all the way, as they ignored the Advisory Letter about icing/ignition that all Metro pilots are familiar with. To their credit they did deadstick it IMC, off field, and everyone made it out ok.

but for those who may not be too familiar with the accident that MetroSherrif alluded to:

The version I heard was that the plane was full of Japanese tourists headed to the Grand Canyon for a sight-seeing trip. They iced up on the approach, went missed, diverted to Bullhead (where it was warmer), ingested the ice into the intakes, crashed on the extended centerline...

Someone told me afterwards that as the tourists extricated themselves from the wreckage (all wearing cameras per de rigueur) they began taking pictures of the entire scene.

Interesting slide show back home I'm sure.

Ive got some right seat time in the metro and ill tell you what, anytime the OAT was near freezing the captain called for the ice switches to be on. I have a hard time beliving that a crew of two would forget to turn on the anti ice switches necessary for that flight. Seems like an MX issue to me.
