I am not sure about thoses cooked cow places in Texas ... but when In Texas I always go to Pappadaeux <sp>. Great Cajun seafood and a hoppin bar. It is right across the street from the DoubleTree Hotel about 3 miles from downtown.

There is no good BBQ in TX. Go to TN or NC instead.

Standing by with flame retardant suit fully zipped up.

Go down to Houston and check out Pee Tee's right across from EFD, by far the best BBQ I have ever had hands down. Pappadaeux (sp?) is nothing more than a chain and doesn't even come close in my opinion. If you are in the Houston area ever and you want the best BBQ then head over to this place, I have yet to find any better.

I'll ask my boss to RON in TN or NC!! As far as everyone else..Thanks for the help so far..Been to Pappadeax..Not to bad for Cajun...

I enjoyed Stubb's in AUS. Depending on when you go, you might even catch some live music, too.

Try the Iron Works downtown, next to the convention center. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but what goes inside is great. Wash it down with a Shiner Bock.

Mate,

Some folks, here, wouldn't consider what you get in Texas as "BBQ", but on the other hand, simple pulled pork with vinegar aint it either.

Austin has a number of great BBQ joints. One of the best is "County Line". The original restaurant is out on the late (really looks like a slow river) and there's a newer one closer into town.

Outstanding stuff ...

Salt Lick, Stubb's, Iron Works, County Line are the best. There are some hole in the walls that I can't think off now. If you can make the trek out to the Salt Lick with a herd of friends on a Saturday or Sunday, you will have a great time. Or enjoy a Major at Stubb's and a bottle of Sunkist, and then catch a show. Iron works is great for lunch. They have a really cool patio out back, with a creek running below it. County Line is great for a late lunch on the way out to Lake Travis.

I agree... Stubb's is walking distance from the Capital Marriott, Iron Works is just a short drive and the Salt Lick is about a 30-40 minute drive... All are excellent!

Stubbs, County Line, and Salt Lick are all fantastic, but there are tons of other non-BBQ places to get your grub on in Austin.

Texas Chili Parlor at 12th and Lavaca is probably one of my favorites. Try Threadgills for some home cooking stuff.

Kaus

Thanks to all...Sounds like some good hunting/eating for my two day stint in AUS!!

Austin

While you talking "Huntin 'n Eat'n" don't forget the "University of Texas at Austin" ... very, very friendly ladies there ... ah, the memories ...

Ah, yes the memories....... the tower, the gunfire, the student bodies.

Naples area

What is the name of that BBQ place in APF (supposed to be really good). I flew in there last month and nobody in the FBO had any recommendations.

The Salt Lick is my favorite. Went there with a group of about 8 cyclists after a 120 mile ride around Austin and no food all day. Most of us were drunk from the unbelievable quantity of great meat & beans. (that's all we could get drunk off, as it's BYOB, so make a stop before you get there.) At least in 2000.

Shame on them!!! Michelbob's, best babyback ribs I've ever had, just up the road from what I remember... man I'm hungry.

Yeah, Austin's like that.

Just like Atlanta has daily park bombings, the weekly riots in Los Angeles, and police dogs attacking protesters in Chicago happens so often it's not even noticible.

Hotel balconies fall in Kansas City with alarming regularity, people get assassinated in Dallas every time a convertible passes by, the river in Cleveland is still burning like a tire fire, and every penthouse in Las Vegas houses a reclusive billionaire who stores jars of his own pee.

Idiot.

It's still BYOB, and it's still all you can eat!

Easy there Jethro,

If you'd turn down the volume on that "dueling banjo's" 8-track, you might hear the strains of sarcasm in the aforementioned post.

Maybe we caught them on an off-day, but I have to give a thumbs down for Michelbob's. Maybe it's better if you eat-in instead of take out, but it was no where near the level of good BBQ that I was expecting and that everyone raves about. The people at the APF Airport Authority were right, they told us it wasn't that great.

I guess I'll have to wait until we get an AUS trip.
