Can a pilot have bariatric surgery and still be able to hold a first class flight medical or does the FAA Aeromedical Division frown upon the procedure? If they are approved does anyone know what hoops you have to jump thru to have the procedure done with limited medical red tape? While reading some of the other medical postings I believe that bariatric surgeries may offer help to pilots with other medical conditions other than weight reduction that may be of interest if researched. EX Diabetes.....

An airman who undergoes
bariatric surgery should notify their
regional flight surgeon or AMCD,
and AMEs should defer issuance of
a medical certificate. Regardless of
the procedure, the FAA will need an
operative report from the surgeon to
include any complications that might
have occurred and a current status
report, including electrolyte results
and a CBC. The airman should also
expect to be grounded for a minimum
of 60 days and to be placed on a special
issuance for several years following
bariatric surgery.
