Has anyone been down here in recent history? Any recommendations on where to stay... things to see and do?

Leaving soon and am trying to set up hotels and the like.

The Balboa Inn is nice to stay but where do you like to stay in general?

If you like more action (read that anyway you like) then the Veneto is probably for you. Hotels can be tought to book right now since it dry season. Book early.
