Our decision to conclude 717 production
Today we announced our decision to conclude production of the 717 after we fulfill our customer delivery commitments next year. I know this news comes as a disappointment to all of us. It was a difficult decision for everyone involved with Commercial Airplanes and the 717 program.
In its first five years of service, the 717 has proven its ability to bring tremendous value to airlines and to provide affordable, comfortable and reliable service to passengers worldwide. Customers and passengers simply love the 717. Unfortunately, the overall market for the airplane does not support continuing 717 production beyond delivering on our current commitments.
We extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our employees, customers and partners who worked so well together -- and so hard together -- to make the 717 successful. We can all be proud of our many achievements on the program, including the pioneering of our moving line production system -- an innovation that is establishing a lasting legacy across our current and future airplane programs.
We intend to maintain Commercial Aviation Services activity in Long Beach well into the future to support the world’s efficient and reliable fleet of airplanes built in Long Beach by Douglas, McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. Our tradition of support to in-service airplanes is unequalled and we will maintain that tradition for Long Beach products.
Boeing will continue to compete aggressively with our popular Next-Generation 737 family of airplanes, which serves the 100- to 215-seat market. And, as with all Boeing airplanes, we will continue to provide exceptional customer support for 717s in service for many years to come.
Thank you.
