Does the B1900D model have an autopilot? Do companies that fly these like Colgan, Big Sky, Comutair etc.. remove them or leave them as part of the equip? I have heard different stories about a 1900 and an autopilot....just looking for some clarity.
 
I think you'll find that most "Commuter" airlines that fly the mighty Beech, elect not to pay the extra cost for the autopilot. After all that's what the two young whippersnappers in the front are for.

Besides it is a very stable aircraft to fly when it's in trim. The pax don't get up and move around and there's no FA in the back moving a galley cart up and down the isle so the CG doesn't move during flight very much and with that big arse trim wheel, it's easy to fly in cruise.

The mighty Beech, ahhhh the memories...............

The mighty beech... 8 legs only 6 hours of flying.... I know of couple of ones at GIA have them... I think they have something to do with a military conytract though
 
Some of the Be1900D's have autopilots, you'll find them in mostly the corporate versions because they can afford it. My company doesn't have them, but in our case we really don't need them because their is very little time in cruise any ways. Once you trim it out, It'll fly hands off for minutes without deviating. You don't need an autopilot it's just more to M.E.L., it would be nice to join this century though and have a GPS.
 
Not only do the 1900's not have autopilots at GIA, they don't have pressurization, nose wheel steering, air conditioning, weather radars, am i missing anything else? MEL, thats the name of our lead mechanic.
 
8 legs 6 hours? You young guys are wimps. Back in the day we did 14 leg days with a 4 am show and a 4:20 am go. (this was before we could see the irony of that time) I have the log book to prove it. But those days are gone along with 135 regs and VFR exemptions, thank God. I sure would have killed for an auto pilot back then to just chill during our 15 minutes of cruise. But I will say the old Beech was and is a great flying airplane and would not trade my time in it for a shiny new jet. I will never be as good as when I flew every other leg by hand and only navigated by VOR or Mark I eyeball.

My absolute favorite moment in the 1900-

While pax were boarding one of our C models in LGA, an old WWII vet got on, stuck his head into the cockpit and said to me "Man I think I flew The Hump in this thing!"

Priceless.
 
Great Lakes had 3 1900D's with A/P's when I started in 2000. Within 2 years, none of the planes had A/P's.

On the plus side of having no autopilot, the sim ride at your next interview is rather a breeze...:D

If you really want to shut them up when they ask you what the inflight movie is, with your straightest most serious look on your face, look right at the a-hole who asked the question and without blinking or hesitation tell them that today's movie is "A documentary on why commuter planes crash".

The look on their face is priceless, trust me.
