So what's going over there these days? New mins, upgrades, hiring forcasts, junior/senior bases...? Is it a good place to be now, 1-3 years from now?

"Place your bets!! ... Place your bets!!"

Your guess is probably as good as ours. We are hiring as much as week can. Why? Attrition is way up now. Schedules are being built to 95 hours block max ranging down to minimum guarantee. Days off are from 16 down to minimum 12. Pairings are not commutable on both ends so living in base is best. Bases are PHL, DCA, ORF. Junior base seems to be PHL and DCA for new hires. People with 500 total time are being hired.

We are awaiting the arbitration hearing for our grievance on the 2003 concession agreement that was supposed to take effect when we got a new agreement with United. The arbitrator ruled in the pilots favor that the company violated that language. However a remedy has not been reached and a hearing on remedy will be on July 18, 19 and 20th. I'm sure if anything happens during that period it will be posted here on FI. The pilots are asking for the 2001 contract to come back as it should never have left since we did not have a new contract with United. Should that happen pay will rise, work rules will get better (better trip rig to 1:3.5) and per diem will rise. This will cause our pairing construction to drasticly change or will really boost the pay if they stay the same.

Current junior CA upgrade is about 3 years. Those people had been told to expect a 7 year upgrade so things change rapidly in this industry.

I really recommend living in base if you can as there is no end in sight for the way the pairings are being constructed.

Being from southern California, commuting would be out of the question. Plus I wouldn't mind trying out a different city. I'm young, and single, so nothing is holding me down. With that being said, can a new-hire live ok in Philly or DC without moving too far out in the burbs?

I don't know that for sure as I do not live in any domicile. I commute. But from what people have said it is very expensive to live near PHL or DCA. Some people have talked about more reasonable places to live in ORF. And you never know. ORF might open up for new hires during your indoc class. Then again, it might not. No guarantees. And my crystal ball is on MEL.

If you end up in PHL you might try Allentown, PA (ABE) as I know some people drive from there.

Good luck to you.

ABE is a great place to live, especially with kids.

ORF is pretty senior and looking to stay senior.
