I'm flying on this flight coming up and just had a few questions.

What route do they typically take? Do they go over to like Brownsville and then across the gulf or do they have to go not so direct and stay closer to land?

Just curious.

Also, is it a 2 or 3 hour difference? (4 or 5 hour flight?)

Classic! Leave it to some UND punk to ask such a dumba$$ question.

Why Yes, we do stay within gliding distance of the land just in case they both fail. Screw the direct routing.

2 or 3 hour difference? You tell us Mr. UND wonder pilot. It's on the charts and in the FAR/AIM.

Yeah, thats what I was wondering, stay within 50 nm. Thank you for the information and not some smarta$$ remark. I'm guesing you would need some sort of ETOPS certification to fly the direct route across the gulf.

I was a little surprised, its blocked at 5 hours....thats why I asked the time zone question. Seems a little long. Leave at 9 am and get in at 4 pm. Thought maybe I was missing something.

Actually, no. There's a 162nm exemption allowed that requires life-rafts and ditching training. TWA's newer MD80s were qualified and they crossed the Gulf and also flew fairly direct routings from NYC and BOS to the Carribbean.

Flying over the Gulf outside of 50 miles from land is not based on ETOPS. The ETOPS limits are actually much greater than 50 miles.

I believe they are limited to 50 miles offshore due to the lack of certain water survival equipment and training (ie. life rafts, etc).
