Anyone have any suggestions besides sportys to buy some aviation shirts? Right now, I own 0 aviation related wear, and think it would help if I wore something in public or when out, to spark interest of other possible / potential future aviators

The dorky pilot thread is over on the YGBSM board.

Iceman, if you need to ask why, then you woudn't understand the answer. To your second question: YES! It's just as bad as the N1234 hat, the "remove before flight" t-shirts, or wearing nomex gloves in a C152.

Also, the dorky pilot reference is not a slam against him. If you were to read the thread, you would see most people here are guilty of some form of dorkiness. Some much worse than others...

Yeah, but he's looking to wear the stuff for marketing purposes (presumably to market his services as a flight instructor), not to look cool. In other words, he's looking for a conversation starter, nothing more.

I wear aviation clothing to look cool.
Are you guys saying that i dont look cool in it, because i think i do.

Last Flight Out

This is a pretty cool joint in Key West with a good history to it......Here it is:
During the middle to late 70’s there were only two ways to either arrive or depart Key West. One was by car traveling the old US 1 highway with its infamous seven-mile bridge and the other was the only airline to service Key West, which was called AIR SUNSHINE. Their first flight was at 8:00am ending with the Last Flight Out at 11:00pm. That airline was affectionately called “AIR SOMETIMES” due to its inability to fly on schedule. During that period Key West was only visited by a small number of tourists and it was considered one of the worlds “best kept secrets.” It literally captured those who visited and the most often heard comment was: “I’m not leaving until the Last Flight Out!” Arriving at the airport they would often find that the plane was not flying or it was full. However this was not cause for despair, in fact there are still people in Key West from the 70’s waiting for their Last Flight Out!

They have shirts that should strike up a conversation about aviation and it is not your typical dorky pilot shirt

hat

My favorite dorky pilot hat (which I wear to cover a spot on the back of my head which I swear my wife is shaving in my sleep...) is from Jimmy Buffett's site - www.margaritaville.com - the Air Margaritaville hat. Couple of shirts there as well--the ultimate a Hawaiian shirt with the Hemisphere Dancer on it. But at $65 a bit out of my dorky pilotwear budget.

PA

PS - old joke, but too true-- how do you tell, at a large party full of people, which one is a pilot?
Answer - No problem, he'll tell you, and in the first five minutes...

just reminded me. my company uses local "contract copilots" occasionally for customers that prefer a second pilot for "safety." (extra weight just in case an engine fails  )

anyway, we have company shirts with the logo on the front. just white dress shirts with the logo. that's it. we gave this guy a shirt for his trips. he wore it maybe once or twice. the next time, he shows up in full pilot drag. pilot shirt, tie, epaulets....the works. so he is riding around with me all day. don't i feel lucky.

we didn't match at all. i would have him get out and run an "errand." anything to get him away from me. he'd be in the lobby, i'd be in the lounge.

not to mention that he rode with me in the seneca a lot too. he's 6'7". that made life easy.

pretty sure i hated that guy.

You read "The Savvy CFI", didn't you? :p
Yeah, I'm looking for aviation wear too, for the same reason- marketing as a CFI. I was looking for polo type shirts that has the Cessna or Piper logo...

I must be getting old and tired. I thought this thread was going to be about how aviation was wearing everybody out. GEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.Speaking of wear I better run my stuff to the cleaners, and oooops starting my next flight I have to wear my jacket. Thank God we don't have to wear hats anymore.

I don't know if someone's told you this already, but high schools are a hotbed of potential students. At our recent HS career career mini-expo, the local flight school's booth was by far the most popular. They had a drawing for a free intro flight and a short Powerpoint presentation with some sweet aerial photos along with the benefits and the promising future (haha!) of aviation. Anyway, the school got one or two regular students from that.

Also, try dentists. Dentists have boring jobs and, I think, the highest suicide rate in the nation. And they have lots of money. Introduce them to the world of aviation where they can spend all their money and be semi-happy!

Anyway, the point is, there are better ways to get students than to wear aviation-related clothing.

Bird Nerd

Well I guess I'm guilty of being of being a dork. I have quite a few hats, t-shirts, etc. that either are air cargo related or FBO related (which is a small way to support them, even better if the merchandise is made in USA). Beats wearing an Arizona Cardinal t-shirt (although they are quite rare!) or Florida Gator hat any time.

mogus - there may be better ways of getting students than wearing "aviation related clothing." my queston is, can you think of a cooler way to get students?

yeah. didn't think so.

i'm gonna go polish my gold wings. got a great place on the side of my N3997J hat. gonna wear it to the grocery tomorrow and pick up the ladies. ohhh yeeeah. :D
