F.I.T.

I second Aeronca's suggestions on both getting your CFI at your college and not worrying about your multi right now. Of course, when that time comes you should get both your multi and MEI.

I remember F.I.T. from my days at FlightSafety in Vero. F.I.T. has nice facilities and nice aircraft. The flight line is located at the Melbourne airport. The school has a reputation as being top-notch, on a par with or better than such places as ERAU and U.N.D. In my 2¢ opinion, you won't go wrong if you choose F.I.T.

Thanks for the general idea for the pricing, cause the idea behind my aviation career is too go to college and use loans to pay for the ratings. Thanks for the ballpark figure cause Uncle Sam is going to want some money back when I'm done.

Far as FIT goes they have a very extensive website and it definitely looks like a good place to finish a degree. I wonder how many 4 year colleges take flight instructors and give them jobs while they finish there degree.
 
Clubs

Wow. That's a LOT of $! Many clubs may be small and operate like that but there are some that are a great value.

My club dues are about $23 a month. There is a great selection of aircraft with C172s for $63/hr and three BE-76 Duchesses online starting at $149/hr. Others on the field have Piper Senecas and even a Piper Mailbu.

I have always recommended flying clubs over schools for the best value for your dollar. I also agree with the training in older well maintained aircraft to stretch your dollar. In the end, no one asks how well that 1999 model was equipped, but how much you pay for it will affect how fast you get to your 'end' goal.

4 year degree

Before you set your mind to a 4 year degree in "airplane science", look into a degree in something else, maybe another interest. I just thought it would be nice to have something to fall back on if all goes to hell in the aviation world--also I thought it might show future employers i have a broad background. I struggled with this a while back and am happy with the outcome. I just graduated with a degree in Physics and while in school I worked my way through my private, instrument, and comm. ratings for about $7000 giveortake a few hundred (I have a good friend who is a CFI, and I worked very hard to do this-- but still, add another thou. for an instructor and it's still a great deal). If you find the right instructor at a local FBO and use your time wisely, it can be tremendously cheaper than enrolling in a 141 school. MY plan is to obtain my multi and then enroll in the Allatp cfi program. CFI, CFII, and MEI in 14 days for $5000. I couldn't find a better deal and the cost would be a bit more if I did it at my FBO-- not to mention it would take me forever to complete!!!
If you do it all through 141 schools, you'll be $25K to $45k in dept and your only education will be in aviation.

This is just another view, take it as you will. It is so easy to listen to what other people did or recommend, but to actually take action and do what you decide is another story.

Good luck in what ever you do, work hard enough and you'll get to where you want to be.
