School day

Hey texass, does that shiny metal stuff on the wing anti ice on its own, you got me curious as hell, not sure what the you were talking about, most of the jets I've flown have not had any shiny metal on the leading edge and the hot wing worked fine to keep the ice off.

Shouldnt you college boys be gettin yer books together for school?

Your avatar is curious, Wind. First of all, is that a tranny in that picture, and you gettin ready to ride that wind? Hahahah.

Let me educate you, Windy. Bleed air heated leading edges are probably the most common method of anti-ice protection on modern turbojet powered aircraft. Once in a while, ie the Westwind or mutations of the IA jet, you see a black rubber boot for de-ice on the leading edge. What kinda lear you fly? Does it have bleed air heat on the leading edge or what. Now, you look at the S2 citation, or some of the Hawkers, they have TKS. You still with me windbag?

This here Avanti bein powered by pusher turboprop engines is a little different. Heck, thats why I'm askin' the professionals who fly them for a little information. When you look at the leading edges, at least the one i saw in LAS the other day, there is no shiny metal cuff, no mesh and no leading edge boot VISIBLE, makes it look like its anti-iced by the principle of magic. Thats why I asked, boy.

I'm assuming most of the people on this board are interested in gettin a job with one of these companies. They dont want to hear you and yer ilk flamin' people asking good questions. So grow up a bit.

How about the canard, is that bleed air heated or electric. The wings dont have that there shiny metal cuff on the leading edges, so how exactly are they heated? How does it handle with ice on it?

Come on boys, give me the technical info. And if you dont know, just say so.

Tx.

Hey smartass, I gave ya the correct answer awhile back and you posted the above BS.

It's got a hot wing, no shiny metal cuff required for bleed air to heat the wing, you oughta know that.

The Avanti does use bleed air on the mains, and the forward wing (not a canard) uses electric heat. The tail does not require any anti ice. I do not have an answer as to why there is no cuff, but I can tell you it works real well.

I am curious how Piaggio determined the tail does not need any anti-ice. As anyone who has flown in ice knows, when in icing conditions, ice will form on anything hangin out in the relative wind. Heck, I seen an inch of ice form on a temp probe, so I know that ice forms on all but them fancy naca scoops and such.

So, to reiterate for them windy types who are goin to misconscrew (misspelled intentionally) my question. Since the FEDS are big on tailplane ice prevention and recovery from tailplane icing scenarios, man I cant figure out why they wouldnt deice the tail on this machine. If its a design that does not accumulate ice, then Mr. Piaggio has accomplished an aerodynamic miracle!

Due to the aerodynamics of a three lifting surface aircraft, it was determinded that ice does not form on the tail. You can be assured that an aircraft certified in 1991 had to meet the latest and greatest requirements for flight into known icing. I am certainly no engineer so I can't explain why, but it doesn't build ice.

Thanks for the info, Jolimon

Yea, I went to the Piaggio website lookin for an answer, and I found this example of an aerodynamic miracle.

The P166! What a beautiful bird. (Gooney birds have nothin on this baby.) Shoulda known it wasnt an aerodynamic wonder that allowed the tail to not be protected.

www.piaggioaero.com then click away.

Make sure you keep the kids away from the screen, its ugly man. I know, they say it is a utility aircraft but remember its related.

P180 looks like quite an aircraft. I had to laugh too when I clicked on the cabin comparison cause they make the P180 look twice as big as the Excel cabin. That is a joke. Excel cabin is 5'7, what is the avanti 5'6? Yet, they make the guy squat down lookin like he's gettin ready to use the lav and its backwards.

Good for a laugh.

By the way, Im not buyin that because there's an extra lifting surface, ice doesnt form on somethin hanging out in the ice...thats ridiculous. Ice is gonna form on anything hanging out there.

OK boys gotta go round 'em up now.

Tx.

Here's a question:

Does the P180 require a type? I know it's a prop, but is the MGTOW over 12,500?

I know the RA-290S does......dang thing looks like a pregnant Beechjet. :)

Are you for real?

By the way, the Falcon 20 doesn't have any anti/de-ice on the tail either.

This thread is getting better by the day. Come on kingairrick, defend the east coast and yourself. That texan is callin you out!
Sorry, I was sleeping. Actually, IN Texas! Been here a week, so lots of ammo...
However, now that his question has been answered more than 3 times, it might sink in.
Also, I'm kind of admiring the prose. It can't be easy to type like that. I will say that I don't wear loafers, and none of my leather jackets have fur. Where might I find one?
