This sound awfully dumb, but:

Are there any common jets out there in which the AFCS (autopilot) only controls pitch via the autopilot trim motor which moves the whole H stab...(ie. no tie-in to the elevator)? Or, do all autopilots move both stab and elevator..?

Autopilots as well as humans have problems with overcontrolling when trying to fly with trim alone. I have no knowledge of fly by wire aircraft but I believe all the other popular aircraft have servos attached to the primary flight controls augmented with A/P controlled trim.
