Austrailia or Asia nonrevving

The wifey and I are going to Non-Rev either to Australia or Hong Kong or Japan in early April.

I am wondering what experiences are by using ZED fares on carriers who serve those markets (like JAL, Qantas, Cathay, American, etc.)

What is the likelyhood of an upgrade to business class on an offline carrier? Are any of these routes notoriously booked? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
