Uh oh, fellow aviatrxx.....you opened a little can 'o worms there! The guys dont take too kindly to this kinda stuff!

I don't think scholarships should be offered to "women only". That's one reason I respect Women in Aviation, the organization. Their scholarships are open to both men and women.

There are some that are open to men. There are some that aren't. This one just happens to be that way. There flight scholarships that are limited to only black aviators, or certain university students, or professional oranizations ect. (Don't forget to complain about that too.) The party providing the grant has every right to select the pool of people they want to help and what others 'think' about that doesn't mean a hill of beans. Get over it. Mr Delano provides the money every year out of his own pocket to women he considers following in Marians footsteps. If someone wants to tell him that he shouldn't offer this scholarship in memory of his late wife to only women, send your complaint to the address on the application.

uhm.. don't they have to be open to both men and women? Otherwise it would be discriminatory & illegal. Same goes with those black scholarships ... both white & black people have to be allowed to apply for such things. Doesn't mean they will get it, but they always have the right to apply.

Not always. Depends on the requirements and the party providing the grant. Since the money is administered via a 501 C 3 organization, and the geographic area is wide, they can limit the applicant criteria according to the 99s lawyers. If it were in a smaller geographic range then the criteria would be loosened to include men as the pool of applicants is less. (Same reason why it's can't be limited to members only unless it covers a wide area.) The Imperial So-Lo 99s chose to limit their award to only those in the Imperial Valley/El Centro area, so it's open to men as well. Ditto with the San Fernando Valley 99s scholarship. Details are on the second link above.

I don't mean to open up a can of worms.... but could i then make a global scholarship just for white men?

Wouldn't that be illegal?

You mean like having a "White College" or a "UWCF" or "W.E.T." or something like that?

My friends and I have that discussion all the time. It's okay to call it a "black college" or have the "UNCF" or "BLACK entertainment television" (which I find it funny that a good percentage of their viewers are white (go figure) but if you had a "United White College Fund" or to take it a step farther "United White Male College Fund" there would be riots, challenges in supreme court, etc, etc.

At least we think so. Even my one friend (who is black) agrees...oh well. Ya know what...in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter if you're black or white, male or female.

Call me a pig, a racist, or whatever, but I think you are absolutely correct. In my time preparing for college, I did not see one scholarship that was specifically for white males, but saw several for just about every other race and women.

I often wondered if I applied for the UNCF scholarship, and they said I didn't qualify, if I could pay for college by suing them for racial descrimination....someone convinced me that it might not be a good idea to try.

Hey, all I'm asking for is equality here....nothing else....so, go ahead and flame away if you need too!

(p.s., to go along with the original intent of the post, I do agree the 99's are a very professional organization and benefit many people who love aviation, of both genders)

How many men have won a scholarship?

I don't know personally, as I don't keep track. However, I attended the 2001 conference, and I remember two men won scholarships that year.

new aviation association:

I'm thinking of starting my own association.
LBFMASS
League of Brown-skinned Females Matriculating in Aviation StudieS

Males will be welcome.

White Chicks can apply for scholarships, but figure the odds of you winning one.

I was thinking a good sequel to "white Men Can't Jump" would be "Black Men Can't Ski". How do you think that would go over?

...yeah, my movie "Black guys can't golf" went out the window with Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh....I coulda been rich!

There arent as many scholarships for males because white males in aviation are a freaking dime a dozen. We're 98% of all 121/ATP/typed pilots and so therefore there are scholarships for females. Do I think its right? No. But you have to admit, we are the sole majority in this industry!

aviation only?!! No!.

Doesn't matter the profession, whenever the minority is not equal to the others being hired into the field then you surely can expect these sorts of scholarships to exist. I look at this as more or less of a "pick me up" or "feel good" sort of a hand out. This is indeed a male driven industry, numbers have always and will always be in our favor so don't expect any sort of help or assistance when it comes to these sorts of scholarships. I never did wonder "White male scholarships" never existed. Many are private memorial scholarships and they can and do make and dictate the rules so accept it and move on. Much better to be a part of the majority than being in a minority having to rely on these sorts of things to get where you want to go.

don't lose too much sleep over this. . .
