Is it that difficult to stop in and say hello and introduce yourself. We were in PIT today and the gate agent told us that we have an agrement with US that allows unlimited US Air employees to ride on Southwest. We were flying pit-phl. about twenty mainline peps get on. One US Air pilot stops by and introduces himself the other guy just kept walking and didn't even look our way. The capt. I was with was pretty mifed. Its not that difficult just stop by and say hello!

So what did the CA say to these guys???

the guy who came up front was a nice guy. unfortunatly the capt. didn't yank the other guy off and talk to him. ( i don't mean throwing him off the airplane just up out of his seat to let him know how rude he was)

This would be extremely unusual behavior, not to doubt you, but are you sure he wasn't on an ID90?
Usairways pilots are "old school" about the jumpseat and I couldn't imagine just walking on without saying something to the crew. 100% of the time they are very thankful for another way to get to PHL.

I have done this leg more than a few times and every time the pilot J/S (+) came up front ... knocked ... said hello ... asked for a ride ... presented their credentials ... shook hands with the FO and waited patiently (3 seconds) while I looked over the paperwork. They took their seat ... said hello to all 3 FAs and asked if they could help with seatbelts when then left.

So ...

If someone with a USAir uniform acted like they were entitiled rather than a guest ... all I can say is I haven't seen it.

The USAir/AWest pilots are enduring hell now (I have no dog in this hunt) and anything I can do to make someone's day a bit easier ... I will do it.

If I do run across one of the 'problem children' I will offer some tactful reminders we owe one another respect and professional courtesy.

I'm sure they were just non revs.

I would have to imagine that the people involved were not actually jumpseating. Pretty ballsy move otherwise.

I've never had to toss anyone when I was CA, nor have I ever seen a CA toss anyone off the J/S . I did hear a story about a Mesa Captain tossing off in the flight deck once, but that may be TMI.

It's a pretty simple rule for riding J/S or granting a J/S ... Don't be a d!ck.

so any airline besides UsAir can hop, skip, and jump into the back of the plane?

so you had a bad experience. it happens. don't single out an entire airline because you had one bad experience. if we all did that then no one would get anything done in this industry.

i've ridden jumpseat and not introduced myself. yes, that's right. i did, however, give my boarding pass to the flight attendants during boarding and ask them to offer it to the flight deck crew when they showed up (crew running late from another flight). sometimes you have to use your head and it might be best to stay the heck outta the way during a hectic boarding situation.

don't assume you know the situation. get all of the info first. if it's really that important then greet the accused as they leave the plane.

i believe strongly in jumpseat etiquette. so i understand the concern. just make sure that you haven't created an issue from nothing.

give them the benefit of the doubt and kindly remind them that jumpseating is a privilege.

SWA treats me well when i ride. USAir has always been excellent. hopefully the 'old timers' have left positively influenced the jumpseat manners of us 'young punks' who will follow.

thanks to both companies for the rides in the past and in the future. it is a privilege and i always try to serve well as an 'additional crew member'.

Are you sure they were mainline pilots?

USAirways has invested lots of money in the regional pilot uniform to make it transparent to the traveling public......

Hell, when I see a USAir uniform, it could be AWA, USAirways, Piedmont, PSA, Mesa, CHQ, Shuttle America......do you get the point?

Many times the gate agents insist that you do not have to talk to the captain if they authorize you to jumpseat. I have had this happen and can see where some people may get confused.

First of all I put this put up here on FI to make the USAIR guys aware of what happened. If you want the whole story here you go. We arrived in PIT about 10 early, the ops agent comes down and is just killing time talking to us and FA's. She begins to tell us that they call this flight the USAIR employee express flight because of so many nonrevs. so we ask how they are able to commute on us evryday and she tells us that they have a special agreement with us that allows them to catch a ride, she also said that the PIT station formed a commitee to make sure that they dont lose this benefit. If they catch someone actinglike an idiot they will "ban him" from nonreving on us. She then tells us that we have 3 JS'S. Now i am standing in the door way as the first one gets on hangs a right and just keep on walking. I know he is mainline because I went back upstairs and asked the ops agent. HERE IS MY POINT. It is professional curtesy to stop by and say HI. NONREV PASS-stop by and say HI, FULL FARE TICKET-stop by and say HI. Its called curtesy plus it lets us know who is back there just in case. I was one of those USAIR (express) guys I know what they are going thru and I would never want to see someone pulled of the jump seat but jeez say Hi and move along.

sorry about my spelling its been a long night!

Personally, I don't agree with Non Rev and Full Fare pax.....no matter what they do for a living....stopping by to talk to me when I'm getting ready for a flight. Sure, if you're flying as a jumpseater, by all means I'd like to know who you are and say a few words to make sure you really are who you are.

Whatever.....

Your first post said 20 USAir folks were riding. Do you mean to tell me the CA wanted to speak to all 20 of them? Dude, I don't care if you were 10 min early, that much yappin' would have made you late!
