ATR in Guam??

I know of a rumor around Cape Air (flycapeair.com) that they would be sending there newly aquired ATRs to Guam... They havent gotten the first of the ATRs yet (i believe its due in soon), but cape air did just sign a deal with Connections to be a carrier. Perhaps she worked for them... But they dont fly the ATR in there yet. Did she say they were already doing this or that they would be doing it soon?

FCuk!!! Man I wanted to go to Guam.......Oh well I guess I was meant to be stateside.. Although the diving would be sweet!!!!

**CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** continental connections. Thats bad if they start shelling that sheit out in Guam

With Freedom Air doing Guam-Rota-Saipan in the SH330 and Pacific Island Aviation flying Northwest Airlink SH360 trips on Guam-Tinian-Saipan, Guam-Rota-Saipan and Guam-Saipan, it looks like the Chamoran skies might get a bit crowded. Continental Mike even does a few GUM-SPN daily runs in the 737-800s. You'd think the NW/CO tie would prevent the need for 2 affiliated regional operations, right ? Unless the ATRs are going somewhere further out.

Cape Air

I just left Cape Air a couple months ago, but I know exactly what is going on.

First of all They have NOT YET received their first ATR42, but the first one (only one as of now) just had its "C" checks completed in Canada and is supposedly at the paint shop. It's a former COEX bird.

The plan in the early summer was to acquire 4 ATRs send 3 of them to Guam, (2 ship operation with 1 spare) and operate them on the Guam-Saipan Guam-Rota trips that are currently being served by Continental-Micronesia in 737-800s. Continental Management was fully supporting this venture and actually approached Cape Air with the offer as a result of their satisfaction with Cape Air's performance as a codeshare and connection partner in the Caribbean and in Florida. ( Cape Air is now doing continental connection service out of Daytona, Miami, Tampa, and Sarasota)

I Don't know FOR SURE if this is the reason, but it has been speculated that the Continental Pilots griped to the union (probably rightfully so in my opinion) that the subbing out of mainline (Air-Mike) runs would result in a loss of jobs for their pilots. This put the kebash on any immeadiate action by Cape Air to fufill this role.

On top of this, Cape Air tried to raise money for the ATR program (and 121 certification for that matter) by applying to the towns of Hyannis and Nantucket for grants; stating that an addition of an ATR to this system will drastically reduce noise pollution levels by cutting back on the number of overflights (multiple 9 PAX sections) that exist now. This attempt failed, and facing lower than projected profits last season, this added to the financial complication of the whole project.

Despite all of this, one ATR is in the paint shop, The chief pilot, DO, director of training, and one pilot are currently in Houston TX getting typed on the ATR, and the talk of Guam is in the air again after a several month long silence. Apparently they are agressively pursuing the 121 certification as well.

Due to those lower than expected numbers last season, Cape Air had to close Providence for the winter, and furlough about 20 pilots (with good incentives to attract volentary furloughs). Not only did they succeed in getting voluntarys they blundered by overestimating the amount of reductions which led some of us (content) types to pursue other employment options. Because of this Myself, and between 8-15 others left for other jobs, took furlough recalls at other carriers (eagle and COEX), or just plain don't plan on returning. This is good news for anyone looking to work for them. I believe they will need to hire between 10-15 new hires in early 04 to staff for the summer and beyond. Don't count on an ATR slot though....!!!:D I don't think they're available.

Anyhow, nothing but good things to say about working there (aside from the fact that you fly 402s in CRAPPY weather!) Great people, good maintenance, nice scenery, and way-better-then-1st-year-regional-pay. They'll even pay moving expenses if you go down south. Plus interline travel and j/s on everyone.. All's you need is an ATP and around 100 multi.

Hope this helps

There are definitely no ATR's out here yet! I know the owner of Freedom Air had been approached by Air Mike about running ATR's as Continental Connection, but they have been talking about that for the last year out here. It would make more sense to run the ATR on the route than a 737, as they rarely fill more than half the seats in the 737. Although there is not really a demand for another carrier here, as someone else previosly stated the routes are well covered by Northwest Airlink and Freedom Air.

The scoop

I returned from a year stint with PIA late last year and this is what I know. Freedom lost there 330 in a nasty 200 mph typhoon last year. All they have left was about 8 Cherokee 6's and a light twin doing the Tinian-Saipan run. There was lots of talk about bringing out some ATR's but nothing definate. The locals hate PIA as scheduals are spotty at best and the 360's are loud, dirty and always breaking down. I have been stranded in Rota and Guam many times. Serveral times we had all three planes broken at the same times. Freedom air is not much better, since your constantly in fear of loosing your job for no apparant reason. All in all a pretty dismal place to work. The only saving grace is the pilots you fly with (PIA and Freedom). Some real good guys, with lots of experiance....well that and the asian chicks!

hey, why do they interchange the call sign, say AirMike 1, and continental 1. just wondering. PS, is it pssible to commute b/w GUM and HNL?

Its true the first plane is going to be delivered in Jan. to HYA. I heard Guam by September as Continetal Connection.

Air Micronesia and Continental are separately owned companies(albeit one seniority list) hence the two different call signs. Regarding the HNL-GUM commute, good luck, Air Mike 1 and 2 are always full. A company man with in cockpit privildges might far alright, but that is still a lot of ocean to cover with no backup options. The local flying out here is what you make of it. Of course the pay and bennies could be better, but the cost of living is cheap, and the asian chicks are plentiful. I will believe this latest ATR rumor as soon as I see one flying out here, until then I will keep living the dream knowing my girlfriend is hotter than yours. Cheers!

Is Cape Air going to hire any contract pilots to go to Guam or are their own pilots going to fly the aircraft? Someone says that they are training the managment so I would asume that they are going to train their own guys.

They are using Cape Air Crews. I got another job so I am leaving . I dont believe with my senority that I would be able to hold even an FO postion. The plan is for more than just Guam and more than three airplanes. I would like to stay because i like the job but I need PIC turbine experience now. I wish everyone at Cape Air good luck with the new Airplanes.

Hey Don Juan where are you going? When did you get your rating in a c 402; only 7250 MGTOW no type necessary. Are you leaving before your seasonal commitment to the Carib? How much do you have to pay back of the moving expense money?

Good luck.

I have also flown the 172 heavy. If i want the LOA I will have to pay the money back. Its already been spent to move here. I guess ill have to work something out. I've been here awhile maybe they can pro rate it. I rather not say where im going yet.

CAPN SAC

Good Luck with your Cape Air
career. I have to get turbine time any way
I can. And Ill do anyting to get it no matter who it screws.
Im in this for me and cant worry about anything or anyone else. Best of Luck to you and the people at Cape Air.

Happy Holidays.
Don Juan
