Does it have a starter/generator, or does it depend on an APU to start? Or either/both?

ATR's do not have an APU, most have a propeller brake on the right engine which allows the engine to be run without spinning the prop. They have an electric starter/generator.

I can't believe it took this many posts to answer such a simple question. Kind of reminds me of the joke about "how many middle managers does it take to change a light bulb..."

Are those light bulbs running on AC wild? If so, check em' while the props is spinning.

There is an option for an APU, but cost and space in the forward cargo is why most airlines did not get this option.

Yeah, AC "Wild" always made me laugh when I was on the ATR. I can only wonder if that means something else in French and just lost it's je ne se qua in translation.

It was explained to me that the "wild" just meant that the frequency varied, instead of being constant 400hz like the inverters produced. I will never forget the new mechanic who jumped on just after we shut down and flipped on all the lights for a daily. As we were walking away he was changing one of the landing lights. I figured he would only have to do it once to learn that lesson...
