Has any one here gone through ATP's flight instructor program? Just want to know the quality and depth of the instruction. All but a few of my friends are CFI's and the seem a little concerned with how fast you it takes. Any comments appreciated. Thanks
 
There is no quality or depth, per se. At least not in the way you're thinking. They'll train you to pass a checkride, nothing more, nothing less. Which is fine if you already know what you should know at commercial level and have studied for and taken your written (plus read through the Aviation Instructor's Handbook).

did you go to the ATP program he is mentioning, or is that just your ignorant opinion?

I went through that program, so I'll concur with his ignorant opinion. That's all they have time for; they'll prepare you for a ride with one of 'their' examiners. It's good multi training, but just realize that a couple of weeks does not make a good instructor. Were you a mature, experienced, prepared driver after Driver's Ed in high school? Of course not. It took some time to get comfortable, did it not?
 
YOU can probably get by with putting in the minimum effort, but if YOU really take it upon yourself and do some hardcore studying before you arrive and then really devote yourself during the time you are there, YOU will learn a whole lot. No one can teach you to be a good instructor, it is just something that you have and develop on your own. Are you good at talking to people, are you good at talking in the plane?

If you are doing the program in JAX make sure you get in the program with Walt as the instrutor and things will go fine for you.

As said above though, if you won't be using these ratings anytime soon, you may want another option as disuse sets in pretty quickly.
 
I went throught the program in JAX and Walt is an amazing ground instructor, a wealth of knowledge. I had just finished my Comm SE and Comm ME within 4 months of going there so my book knowledge was at the top of it's game and I took two weeks before I went there to study. The training I recieved there got me through the checkride but really didn't offer much advice on being a good instructor. I felt bad for some of the other guys first few students because they had a major lack of knowledge and still passed. I would say they were my first students when we got together to study.

14 days is 14 days.

Wanna do your multi training with the guy who just got all 3 instructor tickets in 2 weeks a few days prior?
(I'm talking about the guy who goes there for all 3 and back to an FBO to instruct, not the ATP instructors)

This course is just a certification process. They teach the ride with their staff examiners and nothing else. Study as much as you can and do some flying on your own before going into a program like this. It's for your own benefit.
 
You gotta assume that to obtain a certificate to teach each of the 3 ratings should require more quality time than 14 days.

I know I spent a lot of time reading, memorizing and creating lesson plans for each maneuver required for each rating and flew right seat a lot, before earning my tickets. I wanted to learn and earn something with a clear conscience.

It's 14 days for three instructor ratings. What kind of evidence do you need, stupid? It is what it is. I went through it, I took my checkride and passed because I knew most of my stuff before I got there, not because of some high quality U.S. Naval Academy cadet education they've got there. It's a crash course.

I'm not bashing ATP. I think they're a good program, and they deliver what they promise. A rating. Not a "quality education," or else that would be what they'd be touting.

I went through their program and agree totally... I got price quotes from other flight schools and they couldn't compete period! ATP does exactly what they advertise; CFI, CFII, & MEI in 2 weeks......... and for less $ than most schools can offer a CFI course. The 2 weeks where HELL but you get through it successfully and only if you go there ready. If you get there and half @$$ it or go with little experience... GOOD LUCK!

Bottom line... With the costs of flight training going up, it seems like a no brainer to me. Get the ratings and take the initiative afterwards to learn as much as you can before you really start training other people to fly.

It's just like any other accelerated training program.... they give you just enough to get through the check ride. After that, it's up to you to make yourself a better pilot/instructor.
