The ATP WILL expire, but if you are working 121,125, or 135, it need not be current when you take your practical. See 61.39a and b for details.

If you go for an ATP ride with an ATP written more than 2 years old with a company check airman, they know you work for them. But if you go to a DE, what is sufficient proof that you are a 121 or 135 employee?

You'll need a written letter from the Director of Flight Training at your 135 or 121 company verifying your employment.
