I have finally achieved the min. flight hours for my ATP cert. but I'm wondering if I should actually get it. Will having the cert. really do anything for my career (short term)? It seems that I still will be stuck instructing for the next 6 months or so until I get recalled. And once I get upgraded at my airline, they will pay for the ATP along with my type ride. Any opinions/stories to share?

ATP

Without fail, get your ATP. You don't know for sure if and when you will be recalled and/or upgraded. In the meantime, you need to present the best quals possible and over which you have control and can obtain. The ATP is one such qual.

Times now are similar to those of twelve years ago when I was in the commuter job market. The ATP was required by many commuters in those days and preferred by others. I do not believe that things have changed that much during those years. In addition, even though your airline might get you your ATP on its nickel, getting it yourself on your own is a way to demonstrate your dedication to your career.

That's my .02. Good luck with your decision.

I'll second that...

I'll second what bobbysamd said. Go ahead and get the ATP rating. That way, if you don't get recalled, it will show another employer that you have been staying active and keeping yourself current in the "down times". In other words, you aren't just sitting around waiting for a phone call that might never come.
