Does polar hire guys from the regionals or do most of there pilots have previous heavy jet time? Do they hire furloughed major pilots?

For what its worth, Polar hired 3 pilots from shuttle america in one of its last classes

That's mostly correct... Actually it was two in one class and one in the next class after that. To the best of my knowledge, only one of the three had time in big jets.

In the same class as those two former Shuttle-ites there were also two more from Trans States, and I know that neither of the TS guys had flown anything heavier than the Embraer 145.

Back in August while down in Miami I met a Atlas new hire in a restuarant. His previous experience was flying Navajos in Alaska. Atlas was going to be his first jet job. Good on him and the best of luck.

This might sound like a great thing. Just remember that there is a lot to learn. 121 ops, Jet ops, multiple crewmember ops, glass cockpit ops (-400), overseas ops, NATS ops, etc. Be prepared for big time drinking from a fire hose!

One of the other things that might have to be dealt with will be possible animosity from other crewmembers that have worked their way up the ladder without having the luck of jumping past a few rungs. Hopefully that won't happen.

Did the TSA and Shuttle America guys start on the 200 or the 400? Also, if you see a Polar 747 but it uses the "Giant" callsign, is it operated by Polar or Atlas crews? I saw one in Miami a few weeks ago and was a bit confused (I know the companies are related)...

Pretty simple. If it has an Atlas paint job, on the Atlas certificate, it's an Atlas crew. If it's a Polar paint, on the Polar certificate, it's a Polar crew. However, there are some white airplanes that go to one certificate for a while, then back to the other certificate.

A Polar airplane may be on an Atlas flight and use the Giant callsign, and vice. Sometimes we use the customer's callsign. Therefore, I can be in a white airplane, that was once on the Polar certificate, and be using another carrier's callsign one day, and fly that same airplane on a Polar trip and use the Polar callsign the next.

See, simple.

All the people I know are on the "classic" and none on the "barbie jet". If memory serves, that is.

Apparently, life as an FO is much, much easier on the -200 anyway, since the FE has so much work to do...

Do 747-400's have FE's?
