I am considering moving to Atlanta and buying a place. I have looked up at Lake Lanier but think the drive would get old and am considering Buckhead or Mid Town. I have found several great places in Mid Town and was wondering if it is a good place to be. I have heard that it has quite a few how you say alternative lifestyle residents. That does not bother me too much but I would not want to be the only hetero around. Any thoughts from you atlanta folks?

Mid-Town is great if you can afford it. If you can afford Mid-Town, you should also look into the Virginia Highlands area. Very busy area, and I think it would be a fun place to live. Both areas have lots of stuff to do. One major draw back of both areas could be the weekend night crowds. Could make parking if you get home late a little interesting.

Both plus Buckhead (pretty people only up there) are very expensive though.

If you want to be out of the city, I would look northwest or northeast. Avoids the traffic on the 75-85-400 area on the north side. I just bought a place in Marietta, and I like it out this way. Still close enough to the city for me, easy to get to Hartsfield, and reasonably affordable.

One thing about Atlanta: Traffic controls your whole life, Mid-town, N,S,E,W, for radius of 40-50 miles out. The good thing is a flying schedule helps.

Midtown has many who are into the alternative lifestyle. Look at it this way, less competition! Look around Ansley Park. I looked last week at a highrise called the Mayfair. Condos were just reduced as a result of refinancing by the developer. Vinings is a great area with many airline employees there. I grew up in Sandy Springs which is on the northside and it is nice. GA 400 corridor is crowded but, in my opinion, offers the nicest/best bang for the buck. Most folks up 400 are well educated. Schools are good, plenty of attractive women and great restaurants. If you can afford it, I would go for Vinings! As a DAL pilot with 4 years, I cannot afford a house/condo in Vinings. Smyrna, which is near Vinings, is not too bad. Buckhead is great if you are 20 and into the hip hop scene. Good luck.

Atlanta homes

Hey,

I have lived in the Atlanta area all my life. I live in a city called Peachtree City, which is about 25 miles south of KATL. This is the "home base" for most of Delta and many other airline families. It is a very unique place to live unlike anywhere else you will find in the area, and best of all it is an easy drive to the airport in comparison with the rest of Atlanta. If your in the market to buy a home or rent it is prime for lifestyle/taxes/convienance.

It is definatly not Buckhead if your looking for fast pace "Downtown" PTC is not it.

Hope this helps! And let me know if you have more questions about this area.

Marietta, Kennesaw, or somewhere about 25-30 miles outside of town would be best in my opinion, unless you need to work downtown, which would be pure hell (worst traffic in nation, farthest per-person commute in nation).
Suburbs are nice though, and peachtree city is a neat place.
Like previous post said pilot schedules are helpful in this city.

ATL

Go south on 85 south to HW 74. Next, go south about 7 miles and you will find Peachtree City. It's a really nice place to live. Many pilots live here because it's only about 22 miles to Hartsfield. Drive to ATL is about 30 min. Overall, its a really nice place. http://www.peachtreecityweb.com/

I would strongly recommend you stay away from the north side if traffic is any concern to you. I lived in Marietta for 1.5 yr and the commute was unbearable- 35 minutes to the airport on a good day, but could easily stretch to an hour or more using 75 or 285. I scoured atlanta and found very affordable nice places in ptree city and newnan, but ended up buying in an area called east atlanta. It's not for everybody, but definitely has advantages. It's south of little 5 points, with close proximity to midtown, downtown, and the airport(12 minutes, 15 during rush hour on my secret alternate route). It's is a renovation area, with nasty houses mixed in with high dollar renovations. The bad part is the area still doesn't look great, but the good is the prices are much lower than midtown but rising rapidly. It has good restaurants and bars, with more stuff popping up all the time.

I have to agree with the others... avoid the north side unless you like traffic.

Midtown, Buckhead and Vinings are nice and a lot of pilots live there, but if you ask me, it's a little too crowded. It just depends if you want to relax on your days off or party. I prefer to relax, but that's just me.

It seems most pilots live south of the airport. If you're a Delta pilot you can afford to live in Peachtree and cruise around town in your golf cart. Most ASA and Citrus pilots live next door in Newnan, Fayetville, and Griffin. It's an easy commute to Hartsfield with comparatively little traffic. With no traffic, it's about 20 minures to the parking lot and a little more in traffic.
From the north side, you'll spend at least an hour in traffic or about 20 minutes at 3 AM.

Are you really considering moving down to ATL? Personally, I'd wait and see how long the Airtran gig lasts before relocating. You never know what could happen.

Peachtree City

I would just say it is possible to live in PTC and not work for Delta. And driving a golfcart arount the 70+ miles of paths is a great perk.

You do not have to make a ton to live here.
