ABX Air Pilot Union Supports ATI Crewmembers in Strike Ballot Authorization

WILMINGTON, Ohio, Sept 29, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The pilots of cargo airline ABX Air, represented by Teamsters Local 1224, expressed their solidarity today with fellow Teamsters at Air Transport International, whose union leadership recently approved a petition to ballot their crewmembers for strike authorization.
Both ABX Air and ATI are subsidiaries of Air Transport Services Group and both pilot groups have been in drawn out negotiations with management for new contracts. The ABX Air pilots have been negotiating for more than three years, while the ATI crewmembers, represented by Teamsters Local 747 have been negotiating for four years.
"We strongly support our fellow Teamsters at ATI and will stand beside them in every way we can -- that includes joining them on a picket line," said Teamsters Local 1224 President David Ross.
"We have the same goal. We both want a fair contract," Ross said. "We will work with Local 747 to ensure that ATSG management does not play games with our livelihood. And we will absolutely not stand for whipsawing during these talks."

but I did here that management is going to push ATI and if they do go on strike they plan on bringing in abx.

If that's a plan, it's a pretty lousy one. Either way, as you mentioned, our relationships with BAX are somewhat nebulous when considering "struck goods" and anyone carrying it. Yes, we each have runs that we regularly do, but none of them can truly be called "ours" to defend. It goes back to the Michael Dan "never never never" diatribe when ATI was to get 727s, in which we'd rule the BAX ramp with both 72s and 8s. Now we're only 1/4 the company we would/could have been.

I'm sure there are legal ways around defining "struck goods" in this situation to protect the job of a unionized contracted carrier, especially ABX and CCIA, on the TOL ramp. Question is, how many non-unionized companies and crews are out there ready to play?

One of the problems with this type of flying is if the owner of the cargo can just cxl the contract for non performance and put it out for bid again...

was pretty tasteless true, but I did here that management is going to push ATI and if they do go on strike they plan on bringing in abx. Obviously abx loses their ride in the next couple of months and will have plenty of lift to repo to toledo, if ATI goes out.

to help the ATI guys the ABX mec should make it perfectly clear NO ABX aircraft are going to TOL if ATI goes out. I know that the mec here at cappy is already getting their ducks in row with ALPA and legal to send that message to management.

Cappy is already in a strange situation because we do, do ATI trips often. So the mec is working with legal on a definition of what we can and cannot due.

Should be more cut and dry with ABX since your not in Toledo already. Cappy doesnt have the resources and personnel anyways to do any extra flying, but ABX certainly is going to have plenty of lift doing nothing.

Are you referring to the "current" ABX Air pilot contract? You might want to start thinking about what's going to happen when ATSG brings you the "NEW" ABX Air pilot contract.
