Pick 1 of 3

The word pilots descretion pretty much rids ATC of any responsibility! [/B]

You're (pick 1 or more):

1 Blind
2 Illiterate
3 Brain damaged

Let us know which ones you chose.

Well actually they all pretty much guarantee you can't respond.

Well just gurgle loudly into your feeding tube then.

Very good reason not to "scud run".

But oh is it nice to have the skill when it is really needed.

There seems to be a lot of scuttlebutt about a pilot doing everything possible to avoid declaring an emergency. There are such reasons as 'paperwork', or 'you aren't a real pilot if you declare one', and 'what can the controllers do, they aren't with you'? There's even a line from a war-time movie, a pilot had two fighters on his tail and was being shot down. The pilot was on the mike screaming for help. One pilot responded, "shut up and die like a man."

I declared the emergency, got a lot of assistance from ATC, didn't fill out a lick of paperwork ('cept a ASRS form), and only had one call from the local FSDO. Listening to the ATC tape afterwards, I heard a conversation between facilities where one controller was advising the my controller about an inbound aircraft with gyro failures, also an emergency. My controller's response was no,"This is no place for an aircraft with failed gyros," due to my emergency.

That flight landed safely before the storm hit. :D

If I hadn't said anything, or 'we have a small problem need to return.'

Fly SAFE!
