Leaving Kansas City last week IFR, I switched from tower to departure, about 10 miles west I was cleared direct and handed off to Center. After cruising level for about 10 minutes center asks if I am a photo mission flight or something to that effect. I say no and it dawns on me this guy is probably insulting my navigational prowess. He then tells me I am cleared direct and I tell him that last I heard I WAS cleared direct. PNF in right seat concurred. Nothing more came of it but my question is, was I correct to assume that such a comment is just another way of calling you a FLIB? Photo Mission? I can only assume it's some kind of "inside joke" with ATC to query aircraft that have a mind of their own. I may be wrong but it makes sense. I never usually have issues with controllers, the AP helps. If it is what I think it was, I have to admit it was pretty funny. There is nothing worse than being insulted without even realizing it.
