Less than a year ago, ATA Airlines was the largest passenger carrier at Indianapolis International Airport, operating 41 daily flights and talking about getting bigger.

But a new management team took over the bankrupt Indianapolis-based airline. Since then, ATA's presence has been shrinking -- to the point the final three Indianapolis flights will cease tonight.
The last scheduled ATA flight bound for Indy is Flight 4430, which will originate in San Juan, Puerto Rico, take on passengers at Orlando, Fla., and then fly here. It's scheduled in at 10:34 p.m.
While ATA focuses on Chicago and West Coast routes, Northwest Airlines has ramped up Indy service and now offers more than 50 daily flights, making Indianapolis Northwest's largest center in the United States after its hubs at Detroit, Memphis and Minneapolis.

Sad Day

I was based in Indy throughout my ATA Twoyear. It's a sad day especially for all the non-pilot employees...good luck ATA folks...

I knew things were bad, however...........

Good luck Indy folks. I have, and I have had many friends there. My cousin was an instructor mechanic for their school.

For you lurkers and trivia buffs. What was IND called before the need for political international status?

For that matter what was Grissom AFB called before it was GAFB?

I was there for a short stint too. So sad to see what is happening there. Good luck everyone at ATA.

Quimby,

Thanks for remembering history.

One of the low altitude nav routes bisected my grandfathers farm (Brown County, Indiana). I was hooked long before I saw a B-58 Hustler, however, they had a way of putting the icing on the cake.

And a woodie in my young pants.

Boy I sure had a great time when I was there. It is a shame things did not work out well for ATA and its employees.

Good luck to all still there.
