Just curious how you know this before showing up for class? It seems I read somewhere on this board that there are positions open on each aircraft. Doesn't ATA do like most airlines, and bid open positions by seniority order within the class?
Our class had been told beforehand what we were going to get, but that changed on day #2 and we all had to bid! Most of us still got what we wanted, but occasionally, they throw you a curve!
Hi Guys...can anyone shed some light on ATA's forecast hiring numbers for the rest of the year? Also, how many are in the pool and how fast is it projected to drain?
I would be very happy about the 757 if I were you. It is absolutely my favorite aircraft---easy to fly and land. You will love it. The L1011 would have been nice too (I have been on many jumpseats on DL ones from MCO to ATL and back pre-9-11), but I hear the trips are very long. But, I talked to an ATA L1011 FO in Shannon, Ireland once, and he seemed to be walking like a zombie. I asked him why and he stated, "with these long trips, we sometimes stay in one place for four days---last night we had the third night in a row where the flight attendants gave me and the Captain candle lit massages..." He looked very tired, and happy.
I had the opportunity to fly with our 757 fleet manager a few weeks back and the consensus is continual hiring as long as the current business plan is in effect. That translated out to a class of 8 every three weeks indefinitely. Not sure of the pool size, but my guess is that is more like a puddle right now!
Yeah, I'm extremely excited and happy to be starting at ATA. The 73, 75, or L10 all would have been awesome. I know that the 'tri-tanic' as -03M put it is close to going bye, bye according to ATA's business plan. I wonder what the replacement will be, if any. I heard 76 but who knows???
You may be suprised when you get to class. They told me I was going on the L-1011 when I got called, but it was a different story when we got to class. They had all 3 types available, and we just picked our A\C in seniority order. Good luck, you'll love the company.
Just curious, with a choice of all 3 great aircraft, which did you choose and why? For me, I'd take the 757 - I like the stretched 300 version - very, very long.... Although, flying the Tri-Tanic would also be great with the interesting international flying...
When it got down to me, I had all 3 aircraft available, which suprised me. Although I was tempted to bid the 757 (I have about 2800 hours in the 757), the pay and schedule of the L10 won out. It was hard to suck it up and learn a new aircraft, but now I'm glad I did it. The pay difference is pretty substantial starting the second year. Basically, it takes a 757 FO 82.5 hours/month to earn my base pay, and that's pretty consistant throughout the contract life. The schedule is much better also. I will work 15 days this month, and get 107 hours of credit. I didn't work at all last month, and got my 75 hours. Either way, I can't complain. By the way, the L10 is an absolutely delightful airplane to fly, and the crews are the best. Flying the L10 is like working for a different airline. We call it "our little flying club". The pilots are there because they want to be there, doing that kind of flying, and they're all just great. My last trip, I went to Ireland, Cyprus, Kuwait, Poland and Germany. You just don't get that on the 737. Although, I just went jumpseat on the 737, and it's a beautiful cockpit on that airplane. You just really can't go wrong at ATA airplane-wise.
100+ is pretty consistent with what I've been hearing for the last 6 months. Basically, hiring will continue for the foreseeable future. There might be a small pause in January or Febuary, but then it will go back to full time hiring. Good luck, by the way....let me know what happens.
