Internet Access on the road...

I've been using AOL as my internet service provider for the past 6 months because it was free when I bought my laptop. Well, the free 6 month trial period is up and they want me to pay $24 a month for dial-up service. Not worth it in my opinion, but I liked it because I could always dial-up when I was on a trip away from home. I also have AT&T's high speed cable internet access at home. I was just wondering if anyone out there that is also using AT&T high speed cable internet access knows if AT&T will give you a 1-800 number or something like that to use dial-up while you are away from home, and if so how would I go about getting it? I'd appreciate any information that you could give me.

Thanks!

Thanks. I don't think i'm willing to pay for access in addition to the broadband connection i'm already paying for.

Can anyone recommend an internet service provider that offers free internet access? I'd only be using it a few days a month while i'm away on an overnight, and would be willing to deal with a few pop up ads and other advertisements pasted on the window. Unlimited access would be great, but i'm not sure if that's available for no charge. I'd appreciate any sugestions that anyone could offer.

Thanks!

18778968110 is the 800 access number for AT&T Broadband dial up service. It's not as reliable as the cable connection, but it works for me on the road. Usually takes seven or eight tries to get a good connection.:)

Other than the public and college librarys, you might want to try NetZero and Juno, both of which offer free (but limited to 10-hours per month) Internet access. I use Netzero and find they have a lot of rural connection numbers and would say that there service is about average (you get what you pay for ). I think a big positive is Netzero's Internet email accounts which seem to do an exceptional job of filtering SPAM. Also, occasionally Netzero will have weekend trial periods of their premium or "platinum" pay service ($9.95 per month) during which time there are no popup ads.

Alternatively, this is not free, but I am told that Everyones Internet offers pretty good dialup service for $10 per month as well.

I have AOL also. The ONLY reason I stay with them is that they have local access numbers nearly everywhere I go, even out of the country.

Does anybody know of any other ISP that has worldwide access numbers? I would love to dump AOL.

Please note that AT&T's Broadband Internet service, called ATTBI, was bought by Comcast and the option for low cost dial up for your account on the road is going to be eliminated as Comcast does not support the feature. You must use a different provider (which can include AT&T of course but as a full priced dial up user, I think around $19.99).

It is a bummer. Right now I use Earthlink, I was about to get the cheaper dial ups with AT&T to go along with my AT&T broadband but it is no longer an option... I right now pay $47 for cable internet at home + $21 a month for on the road dialup... there has to be a better option.

Yeah, Earthlink is just like that and has tons of dialups in every city we fly to for $20 or so. The problem is when you pay $47 for high speed net at home it would be nice to be able to get discount dialup from the same provider for when you are away from home... AT&T used to do this for $11 unlimited and $6 or less if you used a certain amount of hours or less. Comcast will no longer offer this... Paying $67+ for internet adds up but I just can't give up using my laptop on the road...

A. T. & T./Comcast high-speed access

I was just wondering how you guys like Comcast cable internet access. I can now get it where I live, and for about the same money that I pay for MSN DSL access. The advertising says that cable high-speed access downstream is much faster than DSL.

Also, do you get an internal or external modem? It doesn't matter to me; I'm adept at pulling off the cover off my machine and plugging in a card and screwing in coax into wall connectors.

Thanks in advance for all responses.

Another one to consider is http://www.budgetdialup.com this is a pre-pay service where you can start with only a few dollars.

I switched from AT&T simply because I was not using it enough. It is a great service though. Budget seems to have lots of access numbers and has worked well. I just like tha fact that if I don't use a lot of time in a month I don't have to pay for it. Don't forget the new service offered from FlightInfo.com

Good luck,
AZPilot

Prepaid Hourly - you buy hours of service that can be used anytime you want. Unused time carries over from month to month for up to one year. Prepaid Hourly is ideal for casual internet users who are online less than 30 hours per month and for those whose usage patterns vary, such as students, travelers and PDA users.

10 hours for $3.95
20 hours for $6.95
60 hours for $19.95

Prepaid Month - similar to a traditional monthly plan, you can use the Internet as much as you need for 30 days (maximum 120 hours per month). Unused time does not carry over from month to month. This plan is the most cost effective choice for those who regularly use the Internet more than 30 hours a month.

30 days for $9.95

Comcast (previously ATTBI) cable for me has been stunningly fast. Nearly T1 speed downstream and beats any DSL offered in my area. Upstream is "ok" at 256k but downstream is stunning.

Thanks much. It appears to be cheaper than my Qwest/MSN DSL service. Cheaper still if I buy my own modem.

Just a heads up for those of you interested in dial-up for when you are on the road. I just found an ISP called Access4less.com that offers unlimited hours for $5.95 per month, plus a one time start up fee of $8.00. They have lots of connection numbers in the Chicago area... but i'm not sure what it's like in more remote areas of the country. I do know that they claim to have a large network of numbers to call. It might be worth it to check into it.

I might go with Net Zero's free option that offers 10 hours. I don't think I'd use more than 10 hours a month b/c I don't do too many overnights each month, and I can deal with the pop ups.
