I've found that self notifying on LCR isn't a big deal. In general you'll work more than short call, but there's less fear and loathing at 3am. Self notifying won't affect the amount you work.

They're going to get you, wether you do it or not. If you do it yourself, they won't call you at midnight on your first day, for a 1pm check in. They have to leave you alone for 12 hours prior to the trip, so you can ignore the phone until check in.

Short call is different due to the obvious duty day ramifications.
