You should ask how bad are people being worked on reserve? For Capt 50 nap is not so bad these days, but it can change in a month.

I was hired june 05 and reserve was all i could hold between Nov and Dec. 2 months i guess... however reserve was so easy ive only not bid reserve twice this year. I was getting nap reserve and a busy month was 10 hours! Sadly im doing a normal line this month and the hours flown are double my total for the year. Reserve seems to be hit or miss, some people are flying 60 hours, others are flying 5 hours, summer is here so im sure its going to get a little worse but there are a lot of people on reserve so its not going to be bad still. Nothing like the nightmares last summer... Be aware, the only issue with reserve being so great (easy) is the money, thats why ive finally decided to get a line. This month ill end up getting enough extra from over 75 and PD that ill get the sum of a 3rd paycheck. When your biweekly check is only $525 thats a huge help!

I am in the training class now and they gave us a window of 3-6 months.

They are full of it. 6 months at the minimum and the 3 years upgrade they are telling you is BS too. It will be 6 by the time you upgrade. I'd just leave and go to Xjet asap. Upgrades there are only 2 years

Thats right, tell the new guys to chase an upgrade.

Look, once you get on some place, stay. The only reason you leave is for QOL (no commuting or you simply can't stand life there) or you move up in the chow line. Don't take a lateral move if you don't have to. But don't chase the upgrade, it could go to six years at XJT next week.

BTW, don't believe what they tell you in class. Look at the bid packs and for the junior guy holding a line, look at the junior guy in upgrade. It doesn't lie.

I spoke with crew planning last week and they say they are VERY short on F/Os on the 50. We are having classes right now, so depending on where you are on the list, is gonna depend on how quick you get off of reserve.

Thank goodness they can't make me fly in the right seat anymore. Can you say "Read and Do" every FO checklist?

If you don't mind me asking, why haven't YOU left, then?

Who told you they were short on reserves? If they are short why are they only flying them 5-40 hours a month?

Cause he's too far gone to get out. Not that anyone would hire him when his attitude shows through whether he thinks it does or not.

I am a 50 Captain on reserve and if you look at the finals that come out each month, it has the total hours for each pilot flown year to date. If you want to fly and call you will fly more, if you just want what you can get it is not bad. Very seldom have I been reassigned after I have come into ATL after an assignment. I am on nap reserve this month and I have flown three times to date.

Guys its like any where else, its what you make of it. I have been on the 200 now just over 2 years ( been at asa just over 2 years as well) and I am bidding about 195 out of 489 I think. there is a guy i know who bids reserve and he is like number 57 or 58 on the airplane. You have to remember that not all people want to come fly a hard line, especially the ones that have other jobs or side businesses. The upgrades are the same way, there are about 75 guys or so who choose not to upgrade on the 200 , so with that being said the upgrade really isnt 6 years as some are saying on this board. It reallistically is probably 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years. Now granted that will be a very junior capt bid on the 200 or ATR provided it does stay for another 13 months or so as they are saying. The bottom line is that with the SLC closing being announced that there alot of senior FO's who probably will not make the move. ASA has unfortunately screwed these guys over now twice in about 1 1/2 to 2 years. The main thing for new guys coming to ASA or to any airline for that matter is dont go because of how long the upgrade is. Go because it is where you want to work and it is somewhere you can be happy for the next 5 -10 years and possible even a career.I hate to tell all of you kool aid drinkers out there with masters degrees and such. It really doesnt matter anymore. The majors are going to be so flooded with applicants with a boatload more experience that you have. The days are over of going to any regional , get your 1000 hours of PIC and going to FedEx or UPS. Not busting anyones bubble, just being realistic. Fly safe and feel free to contact me concerning ASA

Also remember that the SLC guys that make the move might go back to the 50. They would be senior on the 200 and have almost any line they want. That alone will make up for the lower pay. Number 60 and above in SLC will have at least 2 years when the displacements start.

Now, this is just plain incorrect. You are correct that many FO's have passed on an upgrade when they could hold it, that does not reduce the upgrade to 3 1/2 years! I have been here almost 4 years and I am NOWHERE NEAR able to hold Captain. There are nearly 250 FO's senior to me now. If only 150 of them take the first upgrade, we still need 15 months worth of attrition, or 30 more freakin airplanes, which aint never happening at ASA. So, 5 1/2 is about the minimum, to 6 or 7 years depending on attrition and how many take the upgrade when they can hold it.

That said, I agree with the gist of your post. Dont go somewhere for an upgrade. Get into a different mindset if you come to ASA. Other than Horizon and Eagle, ASA is the longest to upgrade in the industry.

What he said.

I sure am glad that I upgraded on the ATAHRAH. Life on reserve is obviously worse than it could be, but if you choose to have a decent experience you will. My reserve stint has sucked at times but I try and treat the folks at the GO with a little dignity (deserved or not) and I get what I want. It aint about being a first class kool-aid drinker, it's about getting what I want. More Bees with honey they say.

Upgrade will be a while, but for most of the FO's that won't be a problem with their 350 hours or so. It'll take about 5 years to have the time to upgrade anyway. Before you "high-timer"/1500hr guys get your panties in a wad, I know that there are a lot of FO's with more time than that. I would hate to offend your tender sensibilities.

Well hopefully those guys will go into the 705s

Reserve stinks at asa PERIOD!!!!

Be interesting to see what the union has TA'ed with the company on scheduling issues.

I have no sympathy for reserves that have been on reserve a short time or captains who choose to be on reserve by bidding to be CAPT......I was on it for 2 years as an F/O and would not bid Capt. (if I could) and go back on reserve until there are significant changes in the rules with a new contract.

Upgrade in 3 1/2 years...what a joke! maybe in 5 1/2 years...been here for 4 years and still 200 plus numbers from upgrade. SLC is going to screw us in ATL for any future movement for the forseable future.

peace!

Ditto to that. But more importantly:

Q: What's the difference between a dead dog in the road and a dead Yankees fan in the road?
A: There are skid marks in front of the dog.

 to that!
