Forgive me if this is an old subject.

As I sit here in the crashpad working the USAToday crossword puzzle, I notice a help wanted advertisement on the opposite page. ASA is advertising for pilots in the USAToday, what the heck is going on? Is the job so crappy that none of the out-of-work pilots will work there? Or, do they avoid hiring previously qualified airline pilots? If so, why?

regards,
enigma

You said it. The pool of overly qualified airline furloughees or whatever is drying up. There are far better places hiring those types. American Eagle had to increase their first year pay in order to attract anyone willing to work there. They still came up short. ASA is a miserable place right now. I can't wait to get out of here myself....

Yes and maybe. It was a fun job when the majors were hiring and the commuters such as ASA were used only as a stepping stone. But now, with the way things are, the commuter airlines are becoming a career for a lot of people. And management knows that the majors aren't exactly about to start a huge hiring boom and so they have the pilots by the short and curly's.

Think about it: you pay all this money to go to school and get your ratings. Then, you spend all that time getting multi time at low wages just to get an interview at ASA. (in some cases, fork out 10K for the job). Now, with the prospect of being stuck there, it will take you at least 20 years to break even on your investment. With that being said, a person could have skipped college, gone right to work as a garbageman, worked himself up to driving the truck, and then retired wealthier and with a better pension than someone making a career with one of these carriers. FYI, they make about $20/hr after a couple of years, about what a captain makes after being in the business for a while. Oh yeah, the garbageman doesen't have $90,000.00 in ERAU student loans to pay back, drives a nicer car, owns his house, and is not worried about what the mainline trash hauler is going to do next week. Plus, it is more respectable. How many people are lined up at the door eager to pay someone to pick up trash for them?

I would love to see a copy of that ad. Can you view it online?

I hear we can't get people to come here because of the threat of BK from
Delta, but that could be one of the many false rumors!

I have started the application process, but from what I'm hearing on here, maybe I would be happier at ExpressJet. Is there anyone on here that IS happy at ASA?

It's a bad time at ASA right now due to the DFW base closing, so the DFW guys are a little put out.

The ATL guys have always been unhappy. Cultural thing.

The SLC base went very senior, so a lot of ATL guys are now looking at senior DFW guys being displaced to ATL and bumping them backwards. I haven't heard of any seat displacements due to it, but there will probably be some guys who were holding lines or getting close that might get bumped to reserve by the influx of several hundred DFW pilots.

The good news is the ATL lines will increase as we take back CMR flying, so hopefully it will all work itself out.

The bad news is, a couple of hundred DFW pilots get to go experience more Atlantatude.

yes...lots.

I've just sent in my app to ASA and I know several ASA pilots (senior AND junior) who are very happy with where they are and with ASA.

To be more specific...are any of these content pilots Atlanta based? I know a lot of the DFW guys were pretty happy with it...but obviously a DFW domicile is out of the question now...

I know plenty of ATL guys that enjoy working here.

Just that there's a cultural difference between the two bases, and ATL tends to bring out the "moan and groan" factor in people.

It's not necessarily an ASA specific thing in ATL either. The reason the ramp sucks in ATL is the same reason you can't get your order at Wendy's or can't get pretty much any service industry worker there to give a rat's a$$ about you.

I wouldn't worry about it. Yeah, we bitc8 and complain, especially now that we're in negotiations and DFW got axed, but all in all this is still one of the better regional jobs in the country.

We have good equipment, good maintenance (absolutely no pencil whipping or MEL abuse) and good crews. It's not a perfect place, but trust me, no regional is.

Yes, all of the pilots I know are ATL based. I'm sure there are many discontented DFW pilots out there now.

"Hello Mr. Kettle, I'm Mrs. Pot with ASA recruiting and I don't feel that you are worthy of the opportunity to interview, let alone work, at ASA. Thank you for your time."

I am happy with ASA, and I am in ATL too! Sure I will go to a major, but only a select few.

I have yet to be screwed over, except for two displacements but it is the airline industry, what do you all expect?

Bottom line, if you don't like it QUIT...especially if you are senior to me!!

Peace Out

Hi guys,

I'm new to the board and have a question.

Sounds like ASA is short of pilots. Do you think they will really lower the hiring minimuns. I'm fresh out of ERAU and am looking forward to a career with the airlines. My time isn't much more than 500 hours, but I have a degree from Riddle, an internship on my resume, and extensive MD-90 simulator experience (no type though).

I've accepted the fact that the majors probably won't ever hire again and that's alright. I'm in this profession for the love of flying and not for the money. I believe a company like ASA can fulfill my long-term career needs and if I can get on while I'm still young (I'm 24) believe I can have a very prosperous airline career.

Sorry this is long winded, and thank-you for any advice.

Nice first post. Ok class, let's review the top 5 flame subjects:

PFT
Scabs
RJDC/alter egos
Mesa/JO
ERAU brats

RiddleMan80 is making an sneaky end run to get ERAU in the top 3.

Go build some time, I doubt very seriously they will lower the mins for you - even though you have the prized Riddle degree. Flight instruction really isn't a bad deal and you might learn something.

Who have you been talking to? That is awfully short sighted. The majors will absolutely hire again - however the jobs are not going to be the pinnacle of the profession that they once were. Still good money however. I would venture that you will even see UAL hiring again in the next 5 years as I seriously doubt that all of the furloughees will return. But then again who knows. In any case you really should try and enjoy where you are now and not focus on where you will be in a few years. I met some of my best friends while I was a flight instructor and probably learned more doing it than in any other flying job I have had since. Good luck!

No, I don't see ASA lowering their hiring mins. And it's not that we're short of applicants, it's more like trying to find the right ones.........
