Just have a question,
During the recent hiring at ASA, were there any interns hired?
what kind of time did they have?
I am a previous intern and I have not heard anything from ASA.

Not true...there were a few interns in the April class. At least two of them had UNDER 1000 hours. But to answer your question, yes they have hired some interns.
 
When I was in ATL for my interview. I talked to the intern and the intern said that all of the intern get put in the pool and the interns need to build at least 500 hours before they get called. I don't know how true this is . I am sure the plans change on managment side as time passes.
 
Thats all a bunch of crap. Interns have to go through the interview process just like everyone else. They don't get "put in the pool" unless they interview and are accepted. The mins move around a lot for interns. There is no min # set in stone. Hiring of interns also varies. If there arn't plans for much hireing then they are not likely the first to get called.
If you were an intern, surely you met someone who you can call at ASA and ask them whats going on. If you didn't... You probably won't be called.
 
So an intern got the job with less than 100 hours multi ??? Interesting that they passed the same interview that the "high" time guys did. I would be pretty offended if I were applying for the same job that a low time guy can get.

OK, be offended. Of course they are gonna let interns in with less hours than people from the outside.

Oh, on another note, There are several pilots that were hired here with less than 250 hours Total Time!! (program students)
 
be offended, just because soemone has low time doesnt mean they arent knowledgeable.
Interns work for months without pay, and contribute to the comapny. They make contacts that can get them ahead of the game. Why dont you go whine about people who get jobs based on jsut knowing someone on the inside to!
An Intern that worked for a company, and then interviews probably has more knowledge on comapny policy and procedures, and in some cases the aircraft that the company flies.

Flight time is key to getting hired, but it isnt the only thing that matters.
 
I believe we do pay the interns min wage at ASA. It looks like most of them get thankless jobs like stuffing revisions in pilot mail boxes or working in the GO.

While in the internship the interns get to sit through systems training classes and get some sim sessions, that probably helps them with the interview process.

I had many interns in my newhire class. They we all pretty good people, all grads of aviation programs, all with solid scolastic backgrounds. The all made it through training (most in the E-120, which was not the easiest aircraft to fly), which cannot be said for some more experienced hires off of the street.

Last time I checked you need 250 TT for your COM cert?
 
Rumor control:

Regardless of what you "heard" interns need to meet the minimums for interview: 1200TT and 200 ME.

Yes, once they meet minimums, they are more competetive than a pilot "off the street". This is because they have already demonstrated their loyalty to the company. Management likes hiring interns because they tend to be more loyal to management throughout their careers than pilots who were not company interns.

That's especially important when you have a pilot group gearing up to strike.
 
If that is the case, why were there 3 people in the April class with less than 1000 hours? They obviously must cut the interns some slack or they would not have been there.
 
Interns

Hey guys, I'm not sure if the argument is about whether interns are competent, or why they should get special treatment. I think if we (ASA) don't continue to hire interns, word will get out, and only the lazy idiots will apply and get hired to the internships. I for one like to have a competent intern in the office to get me revisions or paperwork that I am in need of. The chief pilots are not always there, and it is nice to have up to date data on the airplanes. You are not going to change the current practice, and besides I have trained with some interns, they have to pass the same checkride and oral as me. Some are a little cocky, but most realize the opportunity they have, and do well. I was never an intern, got furloughed after 9-11, but I still won't bash someone because they might seem to have a faster track than me. Now, pay for training, that is another thing.

Check your info again. If you are talking about ASA there are a LOT of interns that got hired with WAY less than 1200TT. I'm one of them.

Yes, we hire interns with low time. We hire them because of contracts with the schools that they come from. DCI training academy being one of them. Those schools can't advertise "X % of our graduates become new hires at DCI" if we dont hire any. We maintain contracts with those schools for times of pilot shortages. Not really an issue today. We did have a lot of trouble with the 300 hour wonders and had a lot of Capt complaints about situational awareness issues (which is understandable given their experience levels) a couple of years ago. We did slow down the number of Interns hired due to those complaints, but I am not sure of our current policy. I know that recruiting wants the most experience it can get. :p
 
Tim, I think you have interns confused with the ab-initio programs like DCI academy and such.
