Is ASA in CASS or not?

The gate agent gave me CASS paperwork and then the captain/dispatch did not allow me to ride in the cockpit jumpseat...

They are, but I've found that it's hit-or-miss whether you actually get on. I haven't had any trouble with crews, but I've had several gate agents that claim they don't have CASS. Seems to be a big communications breakdown.
 
We just got CASS last month and all of the kinks haven't been ironed out yet. According to our jumpseat guy, every other CASS airline has to perform some sort of test before they can interface our system. Not all have done it yet. Yours may be one of them.
 
If the gate agent was able to clear him then their "test" should be completed. Unfortunatly not all the Captains out there know that we are now CASS. The company really needs to put out a bulletin about it.
 
They did put out a bulletin. I think it was a little weak on the information though.

I've snagged a ride up front a few times now. In all but one case the flight crew had no idea that they were actually in CASS now. Worked out in the end, but there seems to be a discounect somwhere.
 
I've had a Southwest guy CASS on our airplane in the jumpseat last week. So it works for them at least.

Speaking of jumpseating on ASA, are the CRJ 200's so weight restricted that you guys end up leaving with 2 or more open seats in the cabin quite often? I was trying to jumpseat the other day and saw that a few stand by's were also left behind even though there were a couple open seats in the back. Does the CRJ FMS allow you to compute the weight and balance by using half weights as well as adult weights or is this plane just weight restricted that badly that you can't do anything to allow everyone on board?

I don't fly the 200, but watch out for unusually high amounts of bags or alternate fuel. That goes for the ERJ as well. Kids are 80lbs vs adults of 189lbs, so that always helps.

Never had a problem on the 700 except for Key West, but that is a unique situation down there.

Maybe print off a list of the CASS approved airlines as some backup if you need it. Somebody showed me the apporved carrier list and I was impressed by how many companies are CASS approved.

apparently we are not in all of the other airlines cass systems yet, as i tried to jump in NWA's jumpseat 2 weeks ago and we were not in their computer. Soon enough though, i would imagine.

What flight were you trying to catch?

The 200 can be limited on the relatively short legs where low fuel burn off causes a problem with the landing weight restriction. Needing an alternate can also cause a bigger problem on those flights. We can and do get kid counts to get as many people on as possible but sometimes there's nothing more that can be done.

The company also does bonehead things like sending a plane with the APR deferred (which brings with it a penalty of >1500 lbs) to the 5000' runway in APF, but that's another story. :uzi:

Did you have a seat in back? Cass allows to ride in the actual j/s IF all cabin seats are taken. That is how it works.
 
I was trying to go from IAH to ATL. I overheard the gate agent saying they had 48 on board and was trying to get another person on, but as soon as the Capt. got back on board they immediately pulled the jetway and closed the door. Please don't think I'm pissed or anything that I didn't get on (the next Delta flight was wide open and the Capt. was glad to offer me a ride), I was just curious if the CRJ was more restricted than the ERJ because even when we're weight restricted we're always able to fill the cabin and then most of the time we're able to get a jumpseater up front as well just by not putting so much fuel on board and accounting for half weights.
 
Well IAH-ATL isn't likely to be limited by landing weight so I would guess that it wasn't a weight issue. Maybe a balance issue with not enough bags? I don't know. All the issues I've had with not being able to take a full boat have been on short flights or short runways, neither of which applies to IAH-ATL. :confused:

It had nothing to do with fuel, just the captain not knowing how the system works or not wanting me on the jumpseat. If I have the paperwork from the gate agent stating I was CASS approved, it should not be a problem. The captain had not had an other airline pilot in the jumpseat, although the F.O. had.
 
First, as earlier stated, at ASA, even with CASS, an off line J/S will never be put on the jumpseat unless all seats are full in the back. Secondly, depending on weather and an alternate requirement, the dispatcher-assigned fuel load could have easily reduced payload to below maximum seating. This can happen even on the CR7 on the longer trips.

Were you ever able to speak with the Captain? Unfortunately, with the present system, especially if is a Delta operated station, access to the flight crew is not possible. When time permits, some but not all of our crews will go to the gate area to see if there are any jumpseaters.

If the flight left with empty seats and revenue bumped, most likely it was a fuel or over-fuel issue. Payload restrictions that bump revenue, or for that matter non-revs, will always bump jumpseaters from the cockpit or an empty seat. The CR2 became severely restricted when the FAA changed the weights.

Sorry, that you were unable to J/S on our company. Surely, it was a weight restriction issue and not an attitude. If the Captain rejects a Cockpit J/S, he is required to fill out paperwork giving the reason, which is stated on the J/S form. Please know that our pilots value the J/S and will make every effort to accomodate when operationally feasible. Hope this information helps. With proper credentials, you should always be welcomed!
 
If they were flying a real airplane like the ATR they could have got you on. Jet just suck and blow.

If the gate let you thru...the only thing that I can think of that would keep you out would be a weight and balance issue.

Once the gate checks the database, you should be good to go...i think

Really just depends on the length of the flight or burn off. SHort flights are the worst obviously with the low burns and if the weather is bad or loads are high then it is bad for getting all on that want to go.

The FMS doesn't even do adults and kids seperate. We have to put the kid and JS weight in the cargo.

We also have a growing number of dispatchers that are putting alternates when not required adding to the problem. Most of our stations don't wait and ask the Capt. before and the fueler puts on ramp gas before we get there. Then they ask us what we can do about getting more people on and the station doesn't defuel.
 
Dirty Sanchez. I might have been the FO on that flight. Let me begin by saying that I'm very sorry you didn't get a ride. The captain was worried all four days that he might "get in trouble" and "wanted someone in ops to back him up" on almost every odd occurance on that trip.
The CASS jumpseat was more than he could take. Rather than make a 4 stripe decision and pull out of the gate he called ops. The people at ops on the weekend aren't what you would call a "crack squad". You got hosed. The Captain commutes and has been at the airline for a long time. He just forgot that sometimes you have to help pilots out.
Sorry I couldn't do more to get you on. I don't think ASA will ever run an upgrade class again but if they do and I make Captain... I'll get you on the plane.

If the weather is bad enough for an alternate, the 200 can become weight restricted pretty quick. It's usually worse on shorter legs. A worse problem is CG. If there is a jump seater and not enough bags the CG will be out of the forward limit. I'll usually delay a flight to get ballast, but I find most guys won't.
 
I´ve never left a jumpseater behind!! The CRJ has much better payload capabilities than the ERJ. I can´t tell you how many times I´ve seen the 145 leave with 10 seats open from BTR to ATL. Maybe it was just the operator, and I´m sure the mighty 145XR is no problem.
Fuel burn/landing limit is easy to over come if you get creative....but stay legal :)
I´ve brought 50+jump out of ICT to ATL several times with 1800lbs in the trunk.....just use flaps 20 or head winds or even a unpressurized TO!!
