"Full pay to the last day"
"Why should we give anything, when we're making money?"
" Hold the line brothers, don't sell out like (fill in the Blank)!"
"Screw them them we deserve a better contract, they can stick their phantom jets"
"Management is just trying to get us to bend over"
Any of this sound familiar? Am I commiting treason for even questioning it? I agreed with all of it at one point in my career. At ALG. We were a strong pilot group. We had a great contract. We set the standard for regional contracts at one point. We never had pay for training, we were above that.
When USAir offered us J4J we told them to stick it at first. We didn't have to get jets, we didn't have to grow.
Well my friends, maybe we were wrong. Had we given in, we may have lived to fight another day. Instead folks at ALG with 20 and 30 years with the company maybe on the street before long. I hope it aint so, I met a lot of good people there who deserve better.
Now I'm at ASA and I'm starting to here the same sabor rattling as before.
I contend that the folks at Mesa and CHQ may not be as far off as many of us would like to think. If you stop and think about what's going on around us, maybe we should consider growth over a better contract/ even a consession. Get the airplanes/ flying on the property now and work on a better contract next time around. For many of us it would be a raise. Through an upgrade or just more time at home with a better line.
Most of the folks at ASA that I have flown with have only known growth. They now say they're ready for a better contract. Let's think about what's going to happen in 3 to 5 years when Delta wants their flying back. After all it is there flying. How many people do you want under you when the cutting starts?
The writing is on the wall. Delta will continue to find new bidders for its feed. The question now is, will we fall on our sword or protect our jobs. And for those of you who believe that Delta won't let the WO's fail, talk to the folks at ALG and PDT.
I'm not suggesting we do whatever it takes to grow. I'm only trying show a differnt perspective.
