Sent app in around June 2001 with a solid recommendation. Sent new colored app to fill out late March 2002. Called for interview on May 23rd 2002. Interviewed June 13th 2001, called with class date during drive home from IND. Started class July 8th 2002.
Your friend might be having his pole smoked. As far as I can tell, there is no way to speed up the process or move someone's app to the top of the pile unless accompanied by a letter from Yahweh hisself. A friend of mine got an app in during October of last year with a letter from me and another ATA dude. He has a friend who is in the fleet management office of the 737 program, who had attempted to get him an app without actually writing a rec letter. The Chief Pilots' office told him to forget it, and to have my friend reapply in six months. Horrified, my friend called me to ask what he should do. I wrote him a letter and enclosed his resume in a package to the Chief Pilots' office - exactly as the process specifies. He got an app two weeks later and is now in the pool waiting for a class date.
It just goes to show, they have a decent process and are requiring EVERYONE to jump through the limited number of hoops they have in order to get an interview.
If you have a decent amount of PIC turbine (>800 hours or so) with some large jet experience and a degree (very helpful but not necessary - I'm a 21st year senior) with an internal recommendation you will get an interview as soon as your app gets to the top of the stack. Just remember, ATA has received a serious sh1tload of apps in the past six months, and wait times for interviews have lengthened as a result.
